BigAppleBill's recent encounter with a Patek Philippe timepiece reignites a perennial debate among collectors: the distinction between 'want' and 'need' in luxury watch acquisition. This discussion explores the psychological drivers behind collecting, the perceived value of specific complications, and the unique market dynamics influencing Patek Philippe ownership today. His post serves as a catalyst for a deeper dive into the collector's mindset.

you want it therefore you need it well if we do the need vs want thing, most of us would only have 1 watch
I don’t need it,I already have two of them ,all this with watches.......is just another kind of virus (Swiss made virus ,but they are others to)and no vaccine for bad news:this virus can be treated but in most of the cases is very expensive, the good news: when you treated it makes you feel dam good (for a short period though). One of my treatments
I think it clearly represents the appeal of Radiomir among many Panerai models. Moreover, a reasonable price
yes this and zero logo are the best Pam’s you can get at reasonable prices
usefulness (AR), complications (moon phase and 24 hours) and desirability (steel) ! Now that you have determined you want it but do not need it, what will you do ? 😉
For this one of course there are two very distinct scenarios today, at retail from an AD then perhaps there’s some justification for the satisfying the want. Any other channel then perhaps is a much steeper hill to climb in terms of justification.
