Anaroku challenges the conventional wisdom among Patek Philippe purists by championing Calatrava models equipped with date functions. His personal collection of neo-vintage white gold references, often overlooked due to their smaller size, highlights the enduring appeal and distinct character these watches offer. This article delves into anaroku's curated selection, providing a fresh perspective on these often-underappreciated Patek Philippe timepieces.

These are all WG models. From left to right, they are 3998g, 3445g, 3558g, and 3514g. Only the 3998 is hand-wound, while the other three models are equipped with the famous automatic movement 27-460.

3998g equipped with the manual-winding movement 310SC. I bought it in Zurich when I went to the Lucerne Music Festival. Despite its small size, it has a very solid presence. The rounded bezel gives it a sense of peace.

This is a 3445g. It’s the first vintage model I've ever owned, and I was able to get it cheaply because this reference was sold in large quantities in Japan. This particular watch has been converted to a trans-back at the previous owner's request. The dial has been redone, but is in very good condition. This would be a great model for everyday use. With a thin strap, it fits snugly on the wrist.

This 3558g has a unique presence. I think it’s due to the unusually bold hands and straight lug shape. This dial may be a redone one, but the shape of the bombe is very prominent and very appealing.

I didn’t really like this 3514g model because of the thin bezel, but I bought it because it goes well with the bracelet. However, the archives state that it comes with a leather strap.

I especially like the way the lugs join to the bracelet.

About the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3998

The Patek Philippe Reference 3998 is a classic time-only watch that exemplifies the brand's commitment to traditional watchmaking. Introduced as part of a collection of understated dress watches, the 3998 is notable for its refined proportions and clean aesthetic, catering to collectors who appreciate a more discreet and elegant wrist presence. It represents a period where Patek Philippe continued to produce watches with enduring design principles, suitable for formal occasions.

This reference features a 32mm case, typically crafted from 18k yellow gold, though other precious metals were also available. It is powered by the automatic caliber 240, a thin movement known for its reliability and a power reserve of 48 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal, providing clear visibility of the champagne dial, and offers a water resistance of 25 meters, consistent with its design as a dress watch.

The 3998 appeals to collectors seeking a well-proportioned and technically sound Patek Philippe dress watch without excessive complications. Its production run from 1989 to 2006 allowed for various dial and case material combinations, offering subtle variations for discerning enthusiasts. and still trying to hunt down a nice 2551 or a 3443! So I admire your exquisite taste! Here’s a champagne dial 3445j. Agree it is a perfect daily and a pleasure to wear on the wrist. Great value still today for a wonderful timepiece with the outstanding 27-460 automatic movement. The quality of the rotor alone is something to behold!

As I generally prefer hand-wound watches, the 3998 feels appealing, but, aesthetically, I like the 3445 quite a bit. Thanks for sharing. Best, Emmanuel

Personally, I have no problem with automatic white gold date Calatrava. 😄

I really enjoy seeing the variety of lugs and bezel profiles across these references — it’s a reminder of how much personality Patek could pack into a restrained Calatrava design. The 3558g’s bold hands are such a nice contrast to the more classic look of the 3445g, and your 3998g has that perfect balance of elegance and everyday wearability. I also think the bracelet integration on the 3514g is a sleeper detail — not “purist,” maybe, but undeniably charming.
