Baron - Mr Red shares his Patek Philippe Reference 3483, a steel Calatrava that has been a cherished part of his collection for years. He delves into the rarity of this particular reference, offering his insights on its estimated production numbers and why a steel Patek Philippe might have been an anomaly in the 1960s market. This post offers a fascinating look into vintage Patek Philippe collecting and the unique appeal of less common references.

This one has been in my collection for coming up to four years. Steel. Central seconds. Manual wind. It is a quintessential Calatrava.

One of the bigger US vintage dealers did some research into the 3483 and suggested that less than 15 pieces were known to have been made. That was a couple of years ago. I would say that 15 is too low, with actual production probably closer to 50 or so. Over the last 3 or 4 years, some 15 or so have appeared at auction. I think its reasonably safe to say that the reference is rare, but 50 is more realistic than 15.

It is almost unheard of today to see a reference sell so few. This reference only came in steel and was clearly not popular during the two years or so of its production. 1963-1965 is, I believe its production run, but models were still with ADs into the late 1960s unsold. Yes, it wasn't popular hence so few were made. Steel watches were, of course, not as popular in the past. A steel Patek Philippe may have been seen in the 1960s as almost an oxymoron. Why buy something by the world's premier watchmaker in steel? Go gold. Who really knows why it wasn't popular. For me, when I saw it, it was one of those moments where I knew it was coming into my collection to stay. My collection is approximately half vintage and half modern. Whilst I appreciate the beauty of modern variants, it is true for me that when it comes to Calatravas, the golden era was the 1950s and 1960s. The vintage feel of a 1960s Calatrava is something else.

Some fresh pictures of the watch, taken today.......

.....when it comes to vintage time-only pieces, today's "standards" seem to accept that 35mm is not only fine, but desirable. For those collectors who collect both modern and vintage, 35mm vintage seems de rigeur. This one, as you say, has retained a real modern feel....plausibly courtesy of its lug style.

....i thought 1963-68, but i have been reliably informed that it was just two years. I know Archives show up to 1968.......and from 1963......

hard to be certain...... I think 50 may be reasonable. Yes, the condition of this one is stunning.
