Mikesr, a seasoned collector, recently sparked a lively debate within the WatchProSite community by posing a compelling question: should he trade his Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 5990 for a Ref. 5172? This scenario highlights the complex decisions collectors face when presented with an opportunity from their authorized dealer, balancing personal preference, market value, and strategic collection planning. His query offers a valuable lens into the contemporary Patek Philippe collecting landscape.

Patek Philippe Nautilus Travel Time Chronograph Reference 5990
The reference 5990 represents Patek Philippe's combination of travel time and chronograph functions within the Nautilus collection. This stainless steel variant features a blue dial configuration, positioning it as a sports complication piece within the brand's portfolio during its 2014-2018 production period.
The 40.5mm stainless steel case houses the automatic caliber CH 28-520 C FUS movement, delivering 45-55 hours of power reserve. Technical specifications include sapphire crystal protection, 120-meter water resistance, and a smooth bezel design. The watch is completed with a stainless steel bracelet matching the case material.
This reference appeals to collectors seeking dual complications in a steel sports watch format. The blue dial variant offers color distinction within the 5990 series, while the four-year production window establishes its position as a limited-period offering. The combination of travel time and chronograph functions targets users requiring both timing and dual time zone capabilities.
i believe the 5990 is harder to get in general than a 5172 ... So, unless you loooovve the 5172 ... just looking at chrono24 you can find 5172 with about 10k less than retail price .... so i guess the ad would make a good trade in this case
The current MSRP is roughly $41k for the 5712 vs. $55k for the 5990. The best solution would of course be to just purchase the 5712, if you have a chance, without giving up on this beauty... They would both fit nicely into the same collection ;-) Keep us posted!
I think he said 5172. That's an appealing trade to me, anyhow. Thomas
One would assume the trade is fair due to msrp of 5990 being lower than the 5172...but real secondary market prices on the 5990 is actually higher than the 5172. If I were to trade that in I would request for an allocation on a 5711 in addition to the 5172. Basically you will trade the 5990 for a 5172 and the next in line purchase of a 5711. Then you wonβt miss out on your sports watch!
But personally, while I like the 5172, again I probably wouldn't permute a 5990 for it...ππ
Especially if you love the 5990
