Patekova, a respected member of the WatchProSite community, presents a compelling comparison between two Patek Philippe calendar watches: the vintage Ref. 3448J and the modern Ref. 5726/1A. This article delves into Patekova's insightful analysis of how these distinct timepieces, despite their differences, offer a complementary horological experience for collectors who appreciate calendar complications. His initial post sparked a vibrant discussion, with fellow enthusiasts sharing their own thoughtfully curated watch pairings.

The Patek Philippe Reference 3448 is notable as the brand's first self-winding perpetual calendar wristwatch. Introduced in 1962, it marked a significant technical advancement for Patek Philippe, combining the convenience of an automatic movement with the intricate perpetual calendar complication. This reference established a new standard for complicated wristwatches and laid the groundwork for subsequent automatic perpetual calendar models. It was produced for over two decades, demonstrating its enduring appeal and technical success.
The watch features an 18k yellow gold case with a diameter of 37.5 mm, housing the automatic caliber 27-460 Q. This movement provides a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. The dial is champagne in color, protected by a sapphire crystal, and the watch offers a water resistance of 30 meters. The bezel is polished, complementing the overall classic design of the timepiece.
Reference 3448 is highly regarded by collectors for its historical significance as Patek Philippe's inaugural automatic perpetual calendar. It appeals to those who appreciate the blend of traditional watchmaking with technical innovation. The model was primarily produced in yellow gold, with very few examples in white gold, rose gold, or platinum, making those variants particularly rare. Its production run concluded in 1985, solidifying its place as a key reference in the history of complicated Patek Philippe wristwatches.
I love the way they share a similar dial layout but have very different identities. The only complementary duo in my collection which I can think of is the one below. Not even close to yours, of course, but I acquired the two watches almost together and with complementarity in mind… Best, Emmanuel
I love (perpetual) calendar's, and I like them in pairs. I think these 2 complement each other very well. I also have perpetual calendar's pairings from Lange, Patek, VC.
Your pair of Patek retrograde PCs is wonderful (my personal favourite, without hesitation). Best, Emmanuel
Being both gondolos, both with shaped movement (2521 rec), but one more dressy, the other more daily in my eyes...one with printed numerals and 1 applied ..but both breguet styled. Just find the shapes of both complement each other .. Rishi
Chopard luc do have beautiful pieces in their collection. I still am so in love with the 1860 too, the salmon dial version. I feel the quattro would be a perfect pair with the 16 1860 or even the re edition without the date aperture. I like your combination of dressy sports vs elegance...very classy. Rishi
As for your Chopards I think they are perfect examples of complementary types, including the rare jump hour complication.
