Patekova's exploration of the Patek Philippe Ref. 5496P-015, affectionately dubbed the 'Mystery Watch,' delves into its perplexing market position. Despite its platinum case, retrograde perpetual calendar, and unique rose gold appliqués, the author questions why this reference remains relatively unpopular. This article synthesizes community insights into the watch's design nuances and market perception.

I know … you are thinking “who is he kidding”? This certainly is not a mystery watch. But to me it certainly is a mystery why this watch is relatively so unpopular.

Objectively: 39.5 mm, platinum, retrograde PC, 2 backs, platinum deployant clasp, winding box, sweep seconds, approx 11.2 thick, highly unusual rose gold appliqués raised numeral date markers and other raised gold markers

Subjectively: very comfortable to wear, relatively thin, nice profile, classic Calatrava case, a relative bargain (about the retail price of a gold AC) and simply beautiful.

So waaaaz up?  What’s the problem? What am I missing?

Best, Patekova

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 5496

The Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 5496 distinguishes itself within the Calatrava line by incorporating a retrograde perpetual calendar complication. This reference combines the classic aesthetic of the Calatrava with a sophisticated horological function, presenting the date on a retrograde scale that sweeps back to the beginning of the month. It represents a more complex offering compared to time-only Calatrava models, appealing to collectors who appreciate both traditional design and mechanical ingenuity.

This timepiece features a 39.5mm platinum case, housing the self-winding Caliber 324 S QR movement. The movement provides a power reserve of 48 hours and is visible through a sapphire crystal case back, with an interchangeable solid platinum back also provided. The dial is champagne in color, complemented by rose gold applied numeral date markers and other applied gold markers, all protected by a sapphire crystal.

For collectors, the 5496 offers a blend of Patek Philippe's enduring design language and its expertise in grand complications. Its retrograde perpetual calendar function, combined with the precious metal case, positions it as a significant piece for those seeking a technically advanced yet understated watch. The inclusion of two case backs and a platinum deployant clasp further enhances its appeal.

IMO the gold hands, indices and date numerals don’t look good with the white metal case. The red tipped date hand is too bright red, sticks out too much. I don’t think the gold framing on the day, month and leap year windows looks good. Lastly the moon phase/day night indicator, whichever it is, looks poorly done compared to what Patek usually does. Again just my opinion.

...and will try it on if I ever get the chance. It is very 'competitive' on the secondary market : )

Dial looks top heavy.

But who cares? I love mine, even if it doesn't have the raised gold date numerals like yours. And I love your version too. Perhaps I should hunt for one... let's see.
