Patekova's exploration of the Patek Philippe Ref. 5496P, a platinum Calatrava-style perpetual calendar with a retrograde date, delves into a fascinating question: why isn't this elegant and technically sophisticated timepiece more widely celebrated? This article synthesizes community insights, offering diverse perspectives on the watch's design, market position, and perceived appeal, aiming to uncover the 'mystery' of its understated popularity.

The Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 5496 is a perpetual calendar model featuring a retrograde date display. This reference is distinguished by its specific complication and material configuration within the Calatrava line.
The watch features a 39.5 mm platinum case with an approximate thickness of 11.2 mm. It is equipped with two case backs and a platinum deployant clasp. The dial includes rose gold appliqués for raised numeral date markers and other raised gold markers, along with a sweep seconds hand.
This reference appeals to collectors seeking a Patek Philippe perpetual calendar with a retrograde function in platinum. Its specific design elements and complications position it as a distinct offering within the broader Calatrava collection.
Tbh I have been eying this PC for some time now, wondering which dial I would prefer. On your dial the applied date numbers are much better than on the -001. As I am currently thinking about the 6159g this earlier PC is still in my mind at about half of the price or even less.... Love both straps!
Hope you get one of these watches if you decide to pull the trigger.
But I like colored gold watches very much so it’s a great pleasure for me to see the best of both worlds united here: platinum case and rose gold hands, numerals and markers. My guess would be that this particular watch isn’t more popular because most lovers of white metals would prefer the dial elements to be made of white gold. But I might be wrong of course. Anyway I personally like it and think both straps work well with it. Best regards, Emmanuel
Moreover, it was a good price, perfect size, felt great on the wrist. But I did wonder why it was not appreciated more. It’s as if people don’t like the retrograde function (although I did). Seems to be similar issue for VC retrograde pieces. Just my impressions.
