Patekova's exploration of the Patek Philippe Ref. 5496P, a platinum Calatrava-style perpetual calendar with a retrograde date, delves into a fascinating question: why isn't this elegant and technically sophisticated timepiece more widely celebrated? This article synthesizes community insights, offering diverse perspectives on the watch's design, market position, and perceived appeal, aiming to uncover the 'mystery' of its understated popularity.

The Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 5496 distinguishes itself within the Calatrava line by incorporating a retrograde perpetual calendar complication. This reference combines the classic aesthetic of the Calatrava with a sophisticated horological function, presenting the date on a retrograde scale that sweeps back to the beginning of the month. It represents a more complex offering compared to time-only Calatrava models, appealing to collectors who appreciate both traditional design and mechanical ingenuity.
This timepiece features a 39.5mm platinum case, housing the self-winding Caliber 324 S QR movement. The movement provides a power reserve of 48 hours and is visible through a sapphire crystal case back, with an interchangeable solid platinum back also provided. The dial is champagne in color, complemented by rose gold applied numeral date markers and other applied gold markers, all protected by a sapphire crystal.
For collectors, the 5496 offers a blend of Patek Philippe's enduring design language and its expertise in grand complications. Its retrograde perpetual calendar function, combined with the precious metal case, positions it as a significant piece for those seeking a technically advanced yet understated watch. The inclusion of two case backs and a platinum deployant clasp further enhances its appeal.
Tbh I have been eying this PC for some time now, wondering which dial I would prefer. On your dial the applied date numbers are much better than on the -001. As I am currently thinking about the 6159g this earlier PC is still in my mind at about half of the price or even less.... Love both straps!
But I like colored gold watches very much so it’s a great pleasure for me to see the best of both worlds united here: platinum case and rose gold hands, numerals and markers. My guess would be that this particular watch isn’t more popular because most lovers of white metals would prefer the dial elements to be made of white gold. But I might be wrong of course. Anyway I personally like it and think both straps work well with it. Best regards, Emmanuel
On the movement side would be better, in my view.
The -014 version with "honey brown" dial is on my list of must-own watches.
Your watch is a great one, but I like the proportions of the 5050 more. The watch face is more coherent for me seen the placement of the indications. More balanced as not everything seems to be more to the center. By the way like the 5050 with batons for the hours, not so much with the Roman numbers. But still, yours is also a fine specimen! Be, Dirk
Moreover, it was a good price, perfect size, felt great on the wrist. But I did wonder why it was not appreciated more. It’s as if people don’t like the retrograde function (although I did). Seems to be similar issue for VC retrograde pieces. Just my impressions.
