His detailed observations on its darkened transparent dial, elegant proportions, and the Caliber R TO 27 PS QR movement provide a foundational understanding of this horological masterpiece. This article synthesizes community reactions, exploring the watch's aesthetic appeal, technical prowess, and its place in Patek Philippe's evolving grand complications.

The Patek Philippe Reference 5316 is a highly complex grand complication timepiece, distinguished by its combination of a minute repeater, a tourbillon, and a retrograde perpetual calendar. This reference stands apart from simpler perpetual calendar models by integrating multiple high-end complications, positioning it as a significant offering within Patek Philippe's most intricate watchmaking. It represents a pinnacle of traditional horological artistry and technical execution.
The watch features a platinum case, typically measuring 36.7 mm in diameter. It is powered by the manual-winding Caliber R TO 27 PS QR, a movement known for its intricate construction and precise finishing. The dial is often presented in black enamel, providing a striking contrast to the platinum case and enhancing legibility of its numerous indications. The crystal is sapphire, protecting the complex dial while offering clear viewing of the retrograde date, day, month, leap year cycle, and moon phases.
This reference appeals to collectors seeking Patek Philippe's most advanced mechanical achievements. Its combination of a minute repeater for acoustic time indication, a tourbillon for enhanced precision, and a retrograde perpetual calendar for comprehensive calendar display makes it a rare and sought-after piece. The 5316 continues the tradition of Patek Philippe's grand complications, showcasing the brand's enduring commitment to mastering complex horological functions.
A dream watch, for sure. I don't play the lottery, but maybe I should start. This 5316 and the 5531 world time minute repeater are the best PP releases by far this year.
Clearly all the underlying horology anyone could every want. For me I can't stand this (and all similar patek retrograde PC displays) where the leap year eats into the retrograde hand. Made worse by the framing around the leap year on this model. This is a hard no. Even if patek gave me one I'd trade it for a different grand complication.
but Iām going to have one HECK of a year before something like that is up for consideration. Oh well.
But too busy on the dial side
.. and for the additional photos.
...one way would be to move the logo to where 'Tourbillon' is now. Or put the logo on the case back. The guy who paid a million dollars knows who made it : )
