In this insightful post, jlux, a seasoned collector, explores the transformative power of strap changes, particularly on his Patek Philippe Ref. 5235R. His decision to swap the OEM black strap for a Saffiano "cognac" leather offers a fresh perspective on personalizing high horology timepieces. This article delves into the nuances of how a simple strap alteration can redefine a watch's aesthetic and a collector's journey.

The Patek Philippe reference 5235 Annual Calendar Regulator introduced a distinctive display format to the brand's annual calendar complication. This model features a regulator-style dial, separating the hours, minutes, and seconds into distinct subdials. The central hand indicates minutes, while the hours are displayed in a subdial at 12 o'clock and the running seconds in a subdial at 6 o'clock. This layout provides a clear, uncluttered presentation of time and calendar information, distinguishing it from other annual calendar offerings.
The watch is housed in an 18k white gold case measuring 40.5 mm in diameter and 10 mm in thickness. It is powered by the self-winding caliber 31-260 REG QA, a movement specifically developed for this regulator display. This movement provides a power reserve ranging from 38 to 48 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal on both the front and an exhibition case back, offering a view of the movement. It is water resistant to 30 meters.
First appearing in 2011, the 5235 appeals to collectors seeking a Patek Philippe annual calendar with a unique aesthetic. The regulator display, while historically rooted, offers a contemporary interpretation within the brand's complicated watch lineup. Its production run has seen it offered primarily in this white gold configuration, making it a consistent and recognizable piece for those who appreciate its specific technical and design characteristics.
The end will come soon π. I am happy i play not with strap now. Saying that, i walk some time with the question about Patek Philippe their regulators. You post your regulator, so i can put my thoughts and questions about Patekβs regulators. For me Patek is a traditional. They not flamboyant, and compare to others, they jump not into new. A regulator must be for Patek Philippe a huge leap into something different. For example Rolex, guess they will never come up with a regulator. While a regulato
It is a bit outside the beaten paths but full of charme.
Truly Gerard, if i was going for my first Patek Philippe watch, i go the beaten path with a three hander. I would start with a regulator in the affordable class mechanical watches. Look if it enjoy me, and than go for a regulator from a luxury watch brand.
Collectively I think the whole industry is moving closer to maturity as even Patek now experiments with colorful and textured straps for their off the shelf collection
well done... it is a great reference you have got and the strap brings it forth much better! Enjoy!
