My take:  Same land masses, but other than that, to me couldn’t be more different. Much more detailed and colorful map on the 5231, although colors are perhaps brighter and arguably more vibrant on 5131. Different hands on 5231 and Patek on the dial, not the bezel. Different fonts. Much more rounded and larger case on 5131. More angles and facets on 5231 case. To me more modern look on 5131, while 5231 resembles more vintage WTs, in case style, font and Patek on the dial.

So overall which I prefer ... 5231J.

(However, if it were 5231J vs 5131R or 5131G, not so sure. I like the size, wrist presence and feel of the 5131 case a lot. Also, I think generally the R and G maps  on 5131 are very high quality much like the 5231J map. Also, having aPatek on the bezel of 5131 makes it truly different from all other Pateks that come to mind, vintage or modern.)

But, which do you prefer 5131J or 5231J? Best, Patekova

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 5131

The Patek Philippe Complications reference 5131 is a World Time model, distinguished by its cloisonné enamel dial depicting a map of the world. This reference is part of a series that showcases Patek Philippe's expertise in both horological complications and traditional decorative arts, offering a functional travel watch with significant aesthetic appeal. It represents a continuation of the brand's long-standing tradition of producing World Time watches, updated with contemporary design elements and a self-winding movement. The 5131 is recognized for its intricate dial work, which varies depending on the specific metal and region depicted.

The watch features a 39.5mm case, available in various precious metals, housing the self-winding Caliber 240 HU. This movement provides a power reserve of 48 hours and drives the World Time complication, allowing the wearer to simultaneously view the time in 24 different time zones. The case is fitted with a sapphire crystal, ensuring durability and clear visibility of the detailed dial. Water resistance is rated at 30 meters, suitable for everyday wear. The fixed bezel frames the intricate dial, contributing to the watch's refined profile.

As a World Time model with a cloisonné dial, the 5131 appeals to collectors who appreciate both technical sophistication and artisanal craftsmanship. Its limited production and the unique hand-finished nature of each dial contribute to its desirability within the secondary market. The reference fits into Patek Philippe's Complications collection as a high-end travel watch, offering a distinctive alternative to more traditional time-only or chronograph models. Variants typically involve different precious metal cases and corresponding enamel map depictions.

My personal preference, though I'm not much into J gold, is for the earlier 5131 versions in general...even if clearly less sophisticated than the 5231 in terms of execution, since the latter came over 10 years later. But I admit my preference for the 5130/5131 case vs. the more recent one might also play a role ;-) Enjoy.

I wonder if the 5131 has this contour on the land and ocean? I like your England more than mine...😊

Overall I prefer the 5131 but I’m biased. I like the map colors of the 5231 and the city font but prefer the patek name on the case as well as the case shape of the 5131. Kind of like that people have no idea what watch it is since they’re trying to look for the brand name on the dial.

IMO, key points of the two references are: 5231J: improved technique on the enamel dial because of the 10+ years of experience on the 5131 series, and 2) font for the city ring is more usual 5131J: 1) more vibrant colors (important to me on an enamel dial), 2) no blockage on Baffin Island by the logo on the enamel dial which is already a very small surface, and 3) the crown protector gives the watch a different look Hence for me, the 5131J has a slight edge over the 5231J.
