Emmanuel, known as quattro, introduces the new Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 5227G-015, a white gold variant with a rose-gilt opaline dial. His post meticulously compares this new release to the platinum Ref. 6196P-001, highlighting both their striking similarities and key differences. This detailed analysis offers valuable insights for collectors evaluating these Calatrava models.
Patek Philippe released a
new white gold variant of its
Date &
Sweep Seconds Officer's-style Calatrava: ref.
5227G-015.

The first thing that is striking is the similarity in color and style to the platinum ref. 6196P-001:
- Same rose-gilt opaline dial.
- Same charcoal gray white gold applied faceted βobusβ-style hour markers.
- Slightly different, but both charcoal gray white gold hands.
- Same shiny chocolate brown alligator strap.

Even the
case size is
almost identical:
- 39 x 9.24 mm for the 5227G-015
- 38 x 9.33 mm for the 6196P-001

Personal photo
However, these references are still quite different.
- 6196P: platinum case, manual-winding no-date small seconds caliber 30-255 PS, dot minute markers with no railroad track, classic dauphine hands.
- 5227G: white gold case, self-winding sweep seconds caliber 26-330 S C with date at 3 o'clock, railroad minute track with dot markers for every five-minute interval, faceted dauphine hands.
The
case profile is also
very different:
- 6196P: flat bezel & flat satin-finished flanks
- 5227G: concave bezel & curved and scalloped lugs

And of course the
caseback too.
For me, the most
striking element of this new dial is the
railroad minute track with the
dot markers every 5 minutes.

The
date disc is
white instead of matching the
rose-gilt opaline dial: that's my only
regret (but it doesn't bother me that much, to be honest)...
This design specificity is also the main element that distinguishes this version of reference 5227 from all those that precede it, like the 5227G-010 presented on the left below:

However, the newcomer shares the same self-winding movement and the same hinged caseback with its predecessors.
Finally, I don't know what you think, but I personally find this version very appealing.
So much so that I feel I like it more than the 6196P, which I wasn't convinced by during my try on experience (but of course, I'd need to see the 5227G in person to be sure).

The
look on the
wrist is really very
nice.

So, how do you feel about this new 5227G?

Do you find it interesting and even really appealing too?
Thanks for reading.
