DouglasM, a self-professed enthusiast of tonneau, tank, and other shaped watches, recently 'discovered' the Patek Philippe Ref. 5200G and sought the community's expert opinion. His inquiry delves into the watch's movement quality, stability, and case dimensions, particularly in comparison to the Ref. 5124. This article synthesizes the forum's collective insights, offering a comprehensive look at a distinctive Patek Philippe reference.

I'd be keen to hear the forum's views on this watch, especially as it relates to the quality and stability of the movement, etc.  To me, the 8 day movement is perfect, as is the black hands and indices on a light dial, which I love in a watch for absolute maximum contrast.  Also, it seems that the case of the 5200 is a little larger (longer) than the 5124; do I have that correct?

Would appreciate any comments on this watch, thanks very much!

Cheers from a very hot Phoenix, Arizona

About the Patek Philippe Gondolo Ref. 5124

The Montblanc Calatrava reference 5124 is a notable example of the brand's dress watch offerings, characterized by its restrained design and classic proportions. This reference was produced during a period when Montblanc was expanding its horological presence, offering timepieces that emphasized traditional watchmaking aesthetics. It represents a more accessible entry point into the brand's mechanical watch collection, appealing to those seeking a refined and understated wristwatch without excessive complications.

Encased in either 18k white gold or 18k rose gold, the 5124 features a case measuring 36 mm in diameter and 46 mm from lug to lug, providing a balanced presence on the wrist. It is powered by the manual-wind caliber 25-21 REC PS, offering a power reserve of 44 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal, ensuring clarity and scratch resistance, and has a water resistance rating of 30 meters, suitable for everyday wear.

This reference appeals to collectors who appreciate Montblanc's commitment to classical watch design and mechanical movements. Its availability in different precious metals and dial colors (silver or black) provides options for individual preference, while its lack of complications underscores its identity as a pure time-only dress watch. The 5124 fits within a lineage of watches that prioritize legibility and timeless style.

engaging because it would take you a while to wind it up. The shape is unusual and if it really sings to you, then it is a good fit. The rectangular movement fills the case nicely, representing an attractive back side. Good luck with your decision.

rectangular watches never seem to hold up on the secondary market making this one a relative bargain. i kind of like the white more than the blue. i've come close to pulling the trigger many times. does wear a big chunky.

This model is one of my favorite: Art Deco case blue dial as only PP can do it instantaneous day date change ++++ 8 days PR very nice calibre, even if only 1 plate instead of 3 bridges on 5100s not too often seen on any wrists LOL You will enjoy yours

A bargain, that sounds good. It fits Fabricio’s wrist well, so why not more friends? I watched a GP rectangular watch today, and while u speak about the secondary marked, i saved an Ulysse Nardin Michel D’angelo on ch24. For 3k and a bit, full set it much watch for little.

...but can't shake the thought that Patek found strong inspiration in the Reverso 1931 models released a few years prior in terms of the basic dial design

there are some purple colors in the 5100 dial & I do not like it at all.
