Chap's exploration of strap pairings for his Patek Philippe Ref. 5170R offers a masterclass in how a simple accessory can profoundly transform a watch's aesthetic. His insights into harmonizing strap colors and textures with the rose gold case and opaline dial provide invaluable guidance for collectors seeking to unlock new dimensions in their own timepieces. This discussion highlights the overlooked potential of the 5170R and the art of personalizing a luxury watch.

The Chronograph reference 5170, introduced in 2010, marked a significant development for Patek Philippe as it was the first serially produced chronograph to feature a fully in-house manufactured movement. This reference succeeded the reference 5070, transitioning from a Lemania-based caliber to a proprietary design, underscoring the brand's commitment to integrated manufacturing for its complications. It represents a modern interpretation of a classic chronograph layout within the Patek Philippe catalog.
The reference 5170 features a case measuring 39.4 mm in diameter and 10.9 mm in thickness, available in 18k white, rose, or yellow gold. It is equipped with the manual-winding caliber CH 29-535 PS, which offers a power reserve of 65 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal and is water-resistant to 30 meters. The movement is visible through a sapphire case back, showcasing its intricate finishing.
This reference appeals to collectors seeking a contemporary Patek Philippe chronograph with an in-house movement. Early variants, such as the yellow gold reference 5170J-001, featured a pulsometer scale, which was later replaced by a minute track on subsequent iterations. The various metal options and dial configurations provide distinct aesthetic choices for collectors, reflecting different periods of its production run.
You really bring out the best in your Patek 5170R. I believe this particular dial color/case metal combination is a lifetime keeper. What are the color/hide straps you currently dedicate to this piece? Also, what colors/hides do you believe you may acquire in future for your 5170R? Many thanks! You (IMO) have excellent taste. Best, Robert
However the python strap appears to leave some visible gap - is the python a 20mm? Best, Robert
The lighter brown blends perfectly with the hues of the 5170 gold. I can truly understand why you cannot take it off your wrist.
This was a loaner strap off another piece (20x18, had to borrow a buckle), so I'm slacking until I find a 21x16 strap that fully works. I wouldn't say I'm hooked on the python necessarily, but this color hue is just singing with the RG. Perhaps the right ostrich even. Anyways, there was almost a clash happening with the original strap for me (sacrilege to say, I know) as it was like the opaline, RG and croc were pulling in 3 different directions. But all the sudden with the gold hues in the stra
Yes, the RG settles in nice and comfy with the lighter golden hues of the strap. You are very good at what you do. Best, Robert
Had a brown nubuck croc that was just ok, but it didn't have any of the golden in it, so it didn't quite tie in with what this is doing. Also a cognac ostrich one, which you'd think would work like this one, but the orange in the cognac makes the RG take on this different temperment. I think the secret is in a light brown with almost this golden quality - the RG just completely has a different feel around it and the opaline mellows to a cream (if that makes sense) Have tried blue suede, green su
