GreatPilot@me.com initiates a crucial discussion about the discontinuation of the Patek Philippe Ref. 5170P, seeking community insights on its future perception. This post delves into the nuances of collector sentiment regarding limited production runs, diamond markers, and comparisons with other high-horology chronographs.

The Patek Philippe reference 5070, part of the Complications collection, marked a significant return for the brand to large-format chronographs. Introduced in 1998, it was the first non-perpetual calendar chronograph produced by Patek Philippe since the reference 1463, which ceased production in the early 1960s. Its design drew inspiration from a unique Patek Philippe aviator's watch from the 1940s, characterized by its prominent case and dial layout, yet reinterpreted for a contemporary audience. This reference established a new aesthetic direction for the brand's chronographs, moving towards more substantial case dimensions.
The watch features a 42mm case, initially offered in 18k yellow gold, housing the manual-winding Caliber CH 27-70. This movement, based on a Nouvelle Lémania ébauche, was extensively finished and modified by Patek Philippe, meeting the brand's stringent quality standards. It provides a power reserve of approximately 55 hours. The dial, in this specific configuration, is black, protected by a sapphire crystal, and the watch is water-resistant to 30 meters. The fixed bezel frames the dial, and the watch is typically fitted with a leather strap.
Reference 5070 appeals to collectors interested in modern Patek Philippe chronographs that combine traditional movement architecture with a more contemporary case size. Its limited production run and the subsequent introduction of variants in other precious metals contribute to its collectibility. The reference represents a distinct period in Patek Philippe's chronograph history, bridging vintage inspirations with a new era of larger watch designs.
wish list and i think it s a fantastic piece ,TBH no clue why PP ceased production (if they did)but i m sure it will be sought after very soon ,the whole concept crowned with the diamond makers is sublime .Did your source mentioned any particular reason ?
And really loved it. If you do, and have the opportunity, then one must not deny the callings of their heart Likely this is a model that will slowly come to grow on people, though I appreciate the diamonds make the otherwise subtle P a little less so, and for some that is a negative. Generally I do not like anything adorned with diamonds - a friend’s diamond encrusted Hublot holds absolutely no appeal for me whatsoever - though my (all too brief, unfortunately) experience of the 5170P showed tha
Two AD’s have told me Patek informed them they will not be shipping any more of 5170P out to them. No official announcement form PP I know of but probably will happen during SHII with other sources. I love the watch and it will go nicely with my 5740/1G
What’s not to love! Thank you for your comments, I’m working on getting one now but the prices are not half of a 5070G really about the same on the secondary market depending on the metal and dial, they are half the price f a 5070P which would be more comparable to the 5170P. I know value is taboo on this site and why I did not ask that question albeit an obvious path to explore ...Jim
Only time will tell.
...take the obvious like Datograph, 5370P, etc. aside. Unfortunately I couldn't afford it and probably won't anytime in future with this crazy market. Actually it had a 2 year production if I remember correctly.
