Jlux's exquisite photography and personal reflections on the Patek Philippe Ref. 5170G offer a compelling look at a modern classic. His detailed appreciation highlights the watch's enduring design and horological significance, inviting readers to explore why this reference holds such a special place among collectors. This article delves into the aesthetic and technical merits that make the 5170G a standout Patek Philippe chronograph.

Please allow me to share a few newer pictures of one of my best loved watches, the 5170 G.

This watch represents to me what I like most with PP : timeless elegance !

The combination of the silver dial with the Breguet numerals and the Pulsometer scale just works for me : classic and contemporary at the same time.

One of the best features of this watch are the near perfect proportions : 39.4 mm diameter with 11 mm height. This makes it one of the thinnest chronographs on the market and assures for a very comfortable wearing experience.

Getting close one can see the subtle graining of the silver dial and above all the beautifully sculpted Breguet style numerals.

To me one of the most attractive movements on the market with a superb architecture, modern technology and great accuracy.

The finishing and decoration is beautifully executed.

It is definitely one of these watches in my collection for which my appreciation has grown over the years!

Thanks for looking,
Gerard

About the Patek Philippe Chronograph Ref. 5170

The Chronograph reference 5170, introduced in 2010, marked a significant development for Patek Philippe as it was the first serially produced chronograph to feature a fully in-house manufactured movement. This reference succeeded the reference 5070, transitioning from a Lemania-based caliber to a proprietary design, underscoring the brand's commitment to integrated manufacturing for its complications. It represents a modern interpretation of a classic chronograph layout within the Patek Philippe catalog.

The reference 5170 features a case measuring 39.4 mm in diameter and 10.9 mm in thickness, available in 18k white, rose, or yellow gold. It is equipped with the manual-winding caliber CH 29-535 PS, which offers a power reserve of 65 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal and is water-resistant to 30 meters. The movement is visible through a sapphire case back, showcasing its intricate finishing.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking a contemporary Patek Philippe chronograph with an in-house movement. Early variants, such as the yellow gold reference 5170J-001, featured a pulsometer scale, which was later replaced by a minute track on subsequent iterations. The various metal options and dial configurations provide distinct aesthetic choices for collectors, reflecting different periods of its production run.

From historical importance(first in-house chronograph), to perfect fit(on my wrist), the numerals, and small detailed printing, there’s not much one can fault... This little mechanical piece of art, is my kryptonite;-))) Thank you reminding me to strap it back on my wrist! Your photos are impressive as always... Zsolt.

Everything about this is beautiful. The colour of the case and dial, and that movement. The photos are fantastic.

You must be a welI experienced professional photoshoper!? How can you eliminate the actual numbers without affecting the gradation of the metal as if nothing was there 🀣 I also have 5170 and the thinnesses fits perfectly on my wrist πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘
