GLau reflects on 2017, highlighting the acquisition of his Patek Philippe Ref. 5131P World Time, an 'ice cold enamel polar map' that concludes his 5131 series journey. He shares initial impressions, noting the dial's subdued colors, the watch's substantial heft, and unique features compared to other 5131 references, celebrating a balanced year of horological dreams and community engagement.

First half ended with "The Dream" 's enamel Rousseau Lion in a hot jungle, whereas, due to a PuristS friend with his wise suggestions and the support of the friendly staff at my AD, the second half is ending with the "ice cold enamel polar map" Dream coming true !

Having had the 5131P only for a short period, my initial thoughts are:
- 1. As expected, enamel work is consistent with dials from other metals in terms of quality and artistry
- 2. Dial is more subdued with fewer colors [ different shades of green (less bright than the J's), white, blue and brown ] and less vibrant than the three others, but more wearable if one wants discretion
- 3. Map is especially meaningful for collectors living in the North [ Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Scandinavia (especially Finland for Kari), Iceland, Russia and others (excuse me for my poor understanding of geography and not be able to name more countries) ]
- 4. Unlike in the G, my time zone is on the lower, instead of the upper, deck of the city ring
- 5. Bracelet is heavy and the heft feels really good, just like the 5711P 40th (which I do not have) and doubles as an exercise weight to build arm muscles ! LOL !
- 6. Need to put blue strap on top of the bracelet to see how the looks change in the metal before deciding what shoes it should wear on a daily basis
- 7. Unlike the G, when the pusher is used to change time zones, the minute hand does not move. Perhaps the movement has been improved ?
- 8. The waters surrounding the shores are green and then turn into blue, similar to the G but different than the J with different shades of blue only

Overall, this "Winter", "Arctic" or "Ice Age" piece is a great & wonderful conclusion for the 5131 series !

Although this year has been a busy one in terms of work with lots of up's and down's, spending and enjoying time with the family, PuristSPro community (online communications and offline GTGs), and enamel dials & other pieces made 2017 a balanced and delightful year overall ! smile

Happy New Year to you all and look forward to what 2018 will bring us in terms of horological dreams !

Cheers,

Gordon

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 5131

The Patek Philippe Complications reference 5131 is a World Time model, distinguished by its cloisonné enamel dial depicting a map of the world. This reference is part of a series that showcases Patek Philippe's expertise in both horological complications and traditional decorative arts, offering a functional travel watch with significant aesthetic appeal. It represents a continuation of the brand's long-standing tradition of producing World Time watches, updated with contemporary design elements and a self-winding movement. The 5131 is recognized for its intricate dial work, which varies depending on the specific metal and region depicted.

The watch features a 39.5mm case, available in various precious metals, housing the self-winding Caliber 240 HU. This movement provides a power reserve of 48 hours and drives the World Time complication, allowing the wearer to simultaneously view the time in 24 different time zones. The case is fitted with a sapphire crystal, ensuring durability and clear visibility of the detailed dial. Water resistance is rated at 30 meters, suitable for everyday wear. The fixed bezel frames the intricate dial, contributing to the watch's refined profile.

As a World Time model with a cloisonné dial, the 5131 appeals to collectors who appreciate both technical sophistication and artisanal craftsmanship. Its limited production and the unique hand-finished nature of each dial contribute to its desirability within the secondary market. The reference fits into Patek Philippe's Complications collection as a high-end travel watch, offering a distinctive alternative to more traditional time-only or chronograph models. Variants typically involve different precious metal cases and corresponding enamel map depictions.

Looking forward to some nice side by side shots with the G! Are the pin holes located further down the lugs as well to accommodate the bracelet? If so perhaps order a strap that compensates for this to reduce the open space. Enjoy and once again huge congrats!

photos of the G and P in the new year so that a better comparison can be made. I will also revert on the location of the pin holes. Thank you for the suggestion. Cheers, Gordon

I am simply a big fan of enamel and rare handcraft dials, and not an enamel expert ! An enamel slave perhaps ???!! Cheers, Gordon
