Pretty Boy's original post highlights the Patek Philippe Ref. 5089G-104, a standout piece from the 2022 Rare Handcrafts collection. This article delves into the intricate details and broader context of this exceptional timepiece, exploring its artistic significance and place within Patek Philippe's celebrated tradition of artisanal watchmaking. Pretty Boy's initial appreciation serves as a gateway to understanding the depth and allure of these limited-edition creations.

The Patek Philippe 175th Anniversary Collection, launched in 2014, comprises a series of highly complex and limited-edition timepieces created to commemorate the manufacture's significant milestone. This collection showcases Patek Philippe's mastery across various horological disciplines, featuring a diverse array of complications and artistic crafts. Each model within the collection represents a distinct facet of the brand's heritage and technical prowess, designed for discerning collectors.
The collection includes models with a variety of precious metal cases, such as rose gold, white gold, and platinum, with dimensions and thicknesses varying significantly depending on the specific reference. Movements are exclusively mechanical, encompassing both manual-winding and automatic calibers, many of which are newly developed or highly modified for these special editions. Sapphire crystals are universally employed, and water resistance ratings vary by model, reflecting their specific design and intended function.
This anniversary collection appeals to collectors seeking exceptional examples of contemporary haute horlogerie and significant pieces within Patek Philippe's modern history. The limited production numbers and the complexity of the movements ensure their continued relevance in the secondary market. The collection includes a wide spectrum of complications, from world timers and chronographs to grand complications, offering a varied selection for different collecting interests.

This 5089G-104 is part of the " Lion, rhinoceroses and buffaloes" trio of 5089Gs, all limited editions of 6 (six!) pieces dedicated to some of the main inhabitants of the African savannah: A lion in majesty surveying its territory at sunset (5089G-103), rhinoceroses against a backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro (5089G-104), and bull buffaloes fighting in the mating season (5089G-015). All three stunning dials combine the two Rare Handcraft techniques of cloisonné enamel and miniature painting. Thanks
I always wonder whether in the future the company will create a section in their museum dedicated to the entire range, perhaps even acquiring various missing pieces at auction?
Patek does occasionally buy back some meaningful watches from collectors, via auctions or other means, and the Geneva Museum of course already features several important Rare Handcrafts (though mainly from past centuries). Creating a complete gallery of *modern* Rare Handcraft pieces (i.e., within the references 5075/5076/5089/5077/5086/5177/5738/etc...) would definitely be an amazing project. However, at least as a first reaction I wouldn't be so sure of its feasibility, given that all of Rare
It is a spectacular piece and I can only imagine how special this is, adding to the fact that its art is based on a favourite area of your home town! I completely understand how it will be rather challenging to acquire all the pieces given the various owners, but of course it makes sense that they do showcase the entire yearly collection prior to releasing them to the world. Perhaps one day in the future they may be able to assess the achievability of at least having pieces loaned to them for a
amazing ! Love this dial ! Best of luck to you in getting one.
