MarkTheTime's heartwarming post beautifully illustrates how a shared passion for Patek Philippe can bridge generations, rekindling a father's interest in watch collecting and setting a path for a son. This narrative, centered around the acquisition of a Patek 5056P and a 3940, resonates with the brand's enduring motto about stewardship for the next generation.

Earlier this year I acquired a gorgeous Patek 5056 P, which I love and wear almost almost every day. My father, now in his mid-70s, used to be "into" watch collecting when I was a kid but mostly more "modest" names and pieces he'd find at local antique shows ("we had no internet back in those days!"). Seeing my watch and interest in the hobby, however, clearly re-kindled his own interest. When I showed him a listing for a gorgeous rose gold Patek 3940 that came up for sale over the weekend, he pounced on it almost immediately. He just sent me this picture of it on his wrist, and needless to say, I'm very excited for him - and proud of the "old" man. My mom thinks both of us are insane, of course...
If the slogan is true, that you merely look after a Patek for the next generation, then I guess my 16 year old son is going to be in pretty good shape someday when it comes to HIS watch collection if he plays his cards right...!

About the Patek Philippe Grand Complications Ref. 3940

The Patek Philippe Reference 3940 is a perpetual calendar wristwatch that was introduced in 1985, succeeding the Reference 3450. It is notable for its relatively slim profile and the integration of a perpetual calendar complication in a refined case. This reference became a cornerstone of Patek Philippe's complicated watch offerings for nearly two decades, establishing a design language for subsequent perpetual calendar models. It represents a significant period in the brand's modern history of complicated timepieces.

The watch features a 36mm case, typically crafted from yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, or platinum. It houses the self-winding Caliber 240 Q movement, which is known for its micro-rotor construction, contributing to the movement's thinness and allowing for a slimmer case profile. The movement provides a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal, often accompanied by an interchangeable solid case back and a sapphire display back.

Reference 3940 is highly regarded by collectors for its classic proportions and the enduring appeal of its perpetual calendar display, which includes day, date, month, leap year cycle, and moon phases. It was produced in several series, with subtle variations in dial layout and typography, making early series examples particularly sought after. The reference is considered a benchmark for perpetual calendar watches and remains a significant piece for those appreciating traditional horological complications.

Grand complication. Its about time he enjoys life. Let go of deprivations of the past. At 70s he must fill the void of his desires. I am very happy about your tale. I know some people who are well off yet they buy poor watches cause there wives wont let them buy a Patek. They are so deprieve and i am sure their sex lives sulk. Poor individuals , congrat s to your dad and you. My admiration. Best. Geross.

...it sounds like a fairy tale, in perfect line with the Patek moto for the next generation... Indeed 2 great pieces, 5056 and 3940 are not only iconic but both very versatile and easy to wear in many circumstances (apart from doing sport ) and they complement each other very well with a white + rose color pair. In other words, well done father & son, excellent choice for both, and wear both of you your watch in the best of health for many many years. Best, Mike
