Nicolas (amanico) initiates a compelling discussion on the Patek Philippe Ref. 5004P, a timepiece he deeply admires despite its known split-seconds reliability concerns. His post invites collectors to weigh in on whether the watch's aesthetic and horological significance outweigh its mechanical quirks, especially when compared to its successor, the Ref. 5970P. This article synthesizes community insights, offering a multi-faceted perspective on this iconic Patek Philippe grand complication.

A watch which I would love to get, one day, IF ONLY there were not so many issues with the Split Seconds on this reference.

If it was reliable, I think I would even prefer it to the 5970P!

Best,

Nicolas

About the IWC Ref. 5004

The Patek Philippe reference 5004 is a highly regarded grand complication, combining a split-seconds chronograph with a perpetual calendar. This reference was a significant offering in Patek Philippe's catalog, representing a sophisticated blend of technical mastery and traditional watchmaking. It was produced in limited numbers, making it a sought-after piece among collectors of complex horology.

The watch features a 36mm platinum case with a thickness of 15mm, housing the manual-winding caliber CHR 27-70 Q. This movement provides a power reserve of 60 hours and is protected by a sapphire crystal. The dial is presented in silver opaline, offering clear legibility for its numerous indications. The case is water-resistant to 30 meters.

As a split-seconds perpetual calendar, the reference 5004 appeals to collectors who value both intricate mechanical solutions and classical design. Its production run from 1996 to 2012 saw various dial and case material iterations, though platinum was a prominent offering. The integration of two major complications in a relatively compact case underscores its appeal within the realm of high-end watch collecting.

How problematic is the split seconds ?

to be an early one as evidenced by the blue/yellow moon disc.. Later ones are black/silver. Anyway, a great watch, although personally I prefer (and I say this as a former owner of 5004P), 5970. Proportions, comfort, tachometer and overall look. Best, Patekova

I know many perfer this but I would go for it's successor instead - better proportion, better value.

This watch is gorgeous and I swoon over it... and I never have to suffer from its unreliability!

And I love my 5270's. And this 5004 has 2 holes too 😁
