Nicolas (amanico) shares his admiration for the Patek Philippe Ref. 5004P, a perpetual calendar chronograph that holds a special place among collectors' dream watches. His personal reflection, accompanied by a striking photograph, invites readers to appreciate the enduring appeal and horological significance of this iconic reference. This article explores why the 5004P continues to captivate enthusiasts, drawing insights from the WatchProSite community.

A dream of a watch.

This one I could take a picture when we met with our dear friend Rudy. A thought for him.

Certainly one of my favorite Patek when it comes to dream watches. Would I prefer it to the 5970P, that I don't know...

Best,

Nicolas

About the IWC Ref. 5004

The Patek Philippe reference 5004 is a highly regarded grand complication, combining a split-seconds chronograph with a perpetual calendar. This reference was a significant offering in Patek Philippe's catalog, representing a sophisticated blend of technical mastery and traditional watchmaking. It was produced in limited numbers, making it a sought-after piece among collectors of complex horology.

The watch features a 36mm platinum case with a thickness of 15mm, housing the manual-winding caliber CHR 27-70 Q. This movement provides a power reserve of 60 hours and is protected by a sapphire crystal. The dial is presented in silver opaline, offering clear legibility for its numerous indications. The case is water-resistant to 30 meters.

As a split-seconds perpetual calendar, the reference 5004 appeals to collectors who value both intricate mechanical solutions and classical design. Its production run from 1996 to 2012 saw various dial and case material iterations, though platinum was a prominent offering. The integration of two major complications in a relatively compact case underscores its appeal within the realm of high-end watch collecting.

The size would be pretty much perfect for me as well. As for the difference between the G and P, all comes down to dial and case heft

The slightly smaller size compared to watches nowadays even suites my small wrist size as well so nothing to complain about from me 🤣😜

...the only downside to me is the thickness, but maybe can't be helped. Other than that, pretty damned great.

...but I have worn thin-ish platinum watches that still seem a bit top-heavy. That would be more my concern (if I won the lottery) : )
