Sham1 shares the exciting acquisition of a Patek Philippe Ref. 1503, a vintage piece that marks a significant shift in his collecting journey. This post delves into the allure of a 74-year-old watch, highlighting its unique stainless steel and yellow gold combination and remarkable condition, despite initial reservations about vintage reliability.
More importantly is the condition of the watch which has been 'valeted' by Patek but the dial remains original. Not bad for a 74 year old watch

The Patek Philippe Reference 1503 is a notable example from the brand's mid-century production, distinguished by its 35mm case and teardrop lugs. This reference is primarily associated with steel or steel and gold constructions, setting it apart from contemporary references often found exclusively in precious metals. Its design reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the era, offering a balanced and understated presence on the wrist. It represents a period when Patek Philippe produced watches that combined traditional watchmaking with a more accessible material palette for certain models.
Powering the Reference 1503 is the manual-winding Caliber 12-120, a movement known for its reliability and precision. The 35mm case, often crafted in steel, features the distinctive teardrop lugs that contribute to its classic profile. The watch is fitted with an acrylic crystal, typical for timepieces of this period, and offers a power reserve of 42 hours. While water resistance is rated at 100m, this specification should be considered in the context of historical manufacturing standards.
For collectors, the Reference 1503 holds interest as a steel Patek Philippe from a specific production era. Its availability in steel or steel and gold offers a different collecting proposition compared to the brand's more common precious metal offerings. The existence of a variant, Reference 1503/2, with slightly more prominent lugs, adds a layer of nuance for those seeking specific case characteristics. This reference appeals to collectors interested in the brand's historical output and its diverse material applications.
I like these early two tone cases quite a lot. Very consistent with the time. Br, Dirk
I must admit I know little about vintage watches except that I love their size and the way they look, both the dial and the lugs. The fact that the two tone case is consistent with the time is an added bonus.
But I shoot with my camera only, you shhot with real stuff well done my friend ! Enjoy it and wear it in the best of your health ! Mike
The shots are those from the dealer and definitely not mine. I have not even seen or tried on the watch which is arguably a 'reckless and irresponsible' purchase but it looks too good not to own if possible.
I very seldom buy a watch without even seeing it or trying it on but this was being sold in Germany and I was in London on holiday and am now back in Malaysia. So I had to make an executive decision ie go with my instinct!!
