Nicolas (amanico) initiates a compelling discussion on two distinct Panerai Radiomir references, the PAM 685 and PAM 687. His post highlights how dial variations can profoundly alter a watch's character, inviting collectors to weigh in on their preferences for the classic black versus the distinctive 'coffee' gradient dial. This exploration delves into the subtle yet significant design choices that define these iconic timepieces.

The Panerai Radiomir PAM687 is distinguished by its unique tropical brown dial, a departure from the more common black or blue dials found in the Radiomir collection. This specific dial treatment, often referred to as 'tropical' due to its warm, aged appearance, offers a distinct aesthetic that sets it apart from its contemporaries. It represents a particular design choice within the Radiomir series, appealing to collectors seeking variations beyond standard offerings. The watch maintains the classic Radiomir case shape, known for its wire lugs and cushion profile.
This reference features a stainless steel case measuring 47 mm in diameter, characteristic of many Radiomir models. It is powered by the manual-winding P.3000 caliber, which provides a substantial power reserve of 72 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal, ensuring durability and scratch resistance. Water resistance is rated at 100 meters, making it suitable for everyday wear and light water activities.
The PAM687 holds relevance for collectors interested in Panerai's historical design cues combined with unique dial executions. Its tropical brown dial offers an alternative to the more traditional black dial of the PAM685, providing a different visual character while sharing the same fundamental case and movement architecture. This variant appeals to those who appreciate subtle distinctions within a well-established model family.
Both are absolutely gorgeous though!
Overall, I like the stronger character of the black version.
While originally attracted to the 687 dial, over time I have drifted more towards the 685. The 687 can look stunning in some lighting conditions such as a bright sunny day and while more subdued otherwise I always felt that I may get tired of it over the long run. Of all the 47 pams what I like most about this model is the contained thickness, even if it comes at the expense of 30m WR. It doesn't hurt that the 685 appears to come at a discount in general.
I am not a fan of the text on the bezel on this one. However, the black dial pops a bit more to me
Out of the several Paneraiโs I have, itโs far and away my favorite. Love the shape of the bezel, the wording on the bezel and most of all the gorgeous gradient dial. For sure a keeper.
That one is certainly a piece I could easily see on my own wrist ๐
