Laurent, known on the forums as Makilla, reignites a passionate discussion about the Panerai PAM40B, a reference often shrouded in mystery. His post not only showcases a rare timepiece with a distinctive faded black dial and tritium indices but also serves as a poignant reflection on Panerai's 'golden days.' This article delves into why the PAM40B continues to captivate collectors and the brand's evolution, as seen through the eyes of its most dedicated enthusiasts.

The PAM309 represents Panerai's Radiomir Titanium series in a substantial 47mm case configuration. This reference utilizes titanium construction throughout both the case and bezel, distinguishing it from steel variants within the Radiomir collection.
The watch features a brushed titanium case measuring 47mm in diameter, paired with a matching brushed titanium bezel. Protection comes from a 1.9mm sapphire crystal, while water resistance extends to 100 meters. The movement is identified as Calibre OP XXVII.
This reference targets collectors seeking titanium construction in a large-format sports watch. The 47mm case size positions the PAM309 toward enthusiasts comfortable with substantial wrist presence, while the titanium material offers reduced weight compared to equivalent steel models. The reference appeals to those prioritizing modern materials within the Radiomir Titanium series framework.
This says Panerai to me! Cazalea
It came with the 36. both were the first Titanium ( Grade 2 ) Panerai watches. Same case, same movement, both tritium, the 36 having a chocolate and a Marina Militare ( 4 lines ) dial, and both limited to 200 pieces, even if the 40 was not treated like a LE, but in the facts it is. I really loved the 40! Best, Nicolas
I hunted one for a long time, that's why I remember 116 would be my guess based on the movement plate engraving.
...been a while indeed I've always considered the 40 as the poor relation to the 36. The T/T and the MM stole the thunder from this one. More like a 5218-203A, PAM004 spin off. That being said, it's a gorgeous pice of work. Welcome back
There was a time when I was on the hunt for one and couldn’t find very easily so I moved on.
Nice to hear from an old Paneristi, we also miss those early days from 1998 to 2006 when the brand was exclusive with low production numbers the PAM 40 was a very special piece, experimental launched in Germany and Japan only making it very rare and hard to get. Some Memories to share with you S
