Teofft shares a captivating pictorial of his Panerai PAM399, a special edition piece from a two-watch set (PAM784) that he shares with his wife. The article highlights the watch's unique story, including a rare factory typo on the case back, offering a personal glimpse into this collectible timepiece and its distinctive features.

The Radiomir 1940 PAM398 is a special edition that debuted in 2012, representing a transitional case design in the brand's history. This model pays homage to a period when the Radiomir case evolved from its wire-lug configuration to a more robust, integrated lug structure, preceding the introduction of the crown-guard characteristic of the Luminor. It offers a distinct aesthetic that bridges the early Radiomir and later Luminor designs, appealing to collectors interested in the brand's historical evolution.
This reference features a 47mm case crafted from polished red gold, complemented by a polished red gold bezel. The watch is fitted with a 3mm Plexiglas crystal, contributing to its vintage-inspired appearance. It is powered by the manual-winding Calibre OP XXVII, which is a skeletonized movement, providing a power reserve of 8 days. The water resistance is rated at 30 meters.
The PAM398 is a limited production piece, distinguished by its red gold construction (oro rosso) within the Radiomir 1940 line. It appeals to collectors seeking a historically informed design with luxurious materials and a significant power reserve. The Radiomir 1940 series, including variants like the PAM399, is recognized for its faithful interpretation of a specific period in the brand's design lineage.
You have a very collectible piece in the future IMO! I didn't know these existed so thanks for sharing with us, and love the letter Panerai sent you too! Cheers, Anthony
I am also the recipient of the 399 with the "EEE". I was informed that only the very first batch came with the error +/- 20 pieces. Panerai was very accommodating in replacing the casebacks. it was to my understanding that we were supposed to ship the watches back for replacement but some people were sent the "corrected" casebacks as a spare! ;-) FWIW, I think this makes that watch that much more special. :)
Nice Catch becomes all the tastier, L0L
I thought the proto versions were the only one's with the error. Thought the production models would have had it corrected. Uber cool that you got an extra "e"!
usual. Great photos!
I'm just curious as to what everyone thinks about that. Hard to imagine Panerai could let this kind of misprint slip through. Nonetheless, we have seen certain "oddities" of this nature from time to time. While it seems backwards that anyone should prefer the watch with the word spelled incorrectly, I would also keep it as is :-) Thanks for the post and enjoy your watches!
