In a testament to the transformative power of personalization, m1ti shares his journey of rekindling affection for his Panerai Luminor 8 Days PAM 590. His decision to craft a custom strap, born from a frustrating wait for an OEM Patek Philippe strap, not only enhanced the wearability of his Panerai but also offers valuable insights into the impact of strap choice on a watch's perceived ergonomics and comfort. This article explores how a bespoke accessory can redefine the ownership experience of a beloved timepiece.

The Panerai PAM590 represents a significant evolution in the brand s modern era, marking Panerai s commitment to in-house movement production while maintaining the essential DNA of their historic military timepieces. This reference embodies the transitional period when Panerai moved away from modified ETA movements toward their proprietary calibers, establishing the foundation for the brand s contemporary identity. The PAM590 carries forward the essential Radiomir case architecture that traces its lineage to the original 1940s military diving watches supplied to the Italian Navy, presenting these heritage elements in a more accessible 42mm format that broadened the model s appeal among collectors.
At the heart of the PAM590 beats the manual-winding Caliber P.5000, one of Panerai s foundational in-house movements featuring an impressive 8-day power reserve achieved through three mainspring barrels. This robust caliber operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and showcases Panerai s commitment to reliability and longevity with its substantial bridges, Incabloc shock protection, and twin regulating screws. The movement s architecture reflects traditional pocket watch construction principles, emphasizing stability and ease of service over decorative finishing, perfectly aligned with Panerai s utilitarian heritage. The manual-winding nature maintains the authentic connection to historical military timepieces while the extended power reserve adds practical modern functionality.
The PAM590 s design strikes a compelling balance between historical authenticity and contemporary wearability, featuring the iconic Radiomir case profile with wire lugs, cushion-shaped form, and distinctive sandwich dial construction. The 42mm stainless steel case provides optimal proportions for modern collectors while the black dial with luminous Arabic numerals maintains the stark legibility demanded by the original military specifications. Notable design elements include the classic railway minute track, small seconds at 9 o clock, and the absence of crown guards that distinguishes the Radiomir family from the Luminor collection. From a collectibility standpoint, the PAM590 occupies an important position as an accessible entry point into Panerai s in-house movement family, offering the prestige of proprietary caliber ownership without the complications or premium pricing of more elaborate references, making it particularly attractive to both new and seasoned Panerai collectors.
I have played with the idea before as well but kudos for executing the deal, your strap and pam look fantastic! Do you have pics of the underside, out of curiosity? Do tell about the leather too if you don't mind and congrats to you!
Top side is Barenia from Haas tannery. My wife was brave to get a Barenia Birkin because it patinas unlike Epsom or Togo but it's just classic imo. I also tapered the strap quite a bit to make the watch feels less of a hunk. Starts at 3.75mm to 2mm. Underside is Zermatt also from Haas. I just copied Hermes lining choice. Resists sweat stains a lot more than OEM lining. It feels a lot more pleasant on your skin and smells very little because it has hypoallergenic treatment. This is biggest differ
Top job with your stitching too!
I don't understand what's the wait for PP strap wait. It's not as if the outsourced company is churning out super high quality handmade item either. I had to bite because I stupidly threw away the white gold spring bars and PP won't let you buy a new set without buying a strap.
did you learn it by yourself or did you find a coach?
What a great initiative! That's awesome and judging from the strap...you have quite the competence in making straps. Looks wonderful!
