When astronaut Lieutenant General Thomas P. Stafford (USA) and cosmonaut Lieutenant General Alexei A. Leonov (USSR) shook hands in the docking hatch which linked their respective spacecraft, the space pioneers, along with their crews, were wearing OMEGA Speedmaster Professional chronographs on their wrists.

THE OMEGA SPEEDMASTER

PROFESSIONAL APOLLO-SOYUZ

"35TH ANNIVERSARY"

Commemorating a handshake

The 35th anniversary of their historic handshake is commemorated with the release of the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Apollo-Soyuz "35th Anniversary" chronograph in a limited edition of 1975 watches.

A meteorite dial

The dial has been created from a meteorite which survived its entry into our planet's atmosphere and the high-speed impact with the terrestrial surface. The meteorite's unusual structure is the result its very high temperature when it enters the Earth's atmosphere, followed by a period of cooling. The dial is a single piece cut from the meteorite; accordingly, because no two pieces of the meteorite are exactly alike, each watch in this limited edition is absolutely unique.

The black colour of the meteorite dial is the result of a surface oxidation process. The silvery seconds hand and chronograph counters appear in the meteorite's natural colour.

A pivotal moment in space exploration

The OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Apollo-Soyuz "35th Anniversary" chronograph is a fitting tribute to a pivotal moment in space exploration. A handshake in orbit between these two former space race adversaries demonstrated to everyone back on earth that it was possible to move forward in a new spirit of cooperation.

I am not really a Speedie Fan. But I saw it in the flesh, and I can tell you that it is much better in real than on those pictures. The dial is just fascinating, and to know that it comes from space adds some mystery. Omega explained that the dial is 100 % meteorite, which is unique, as the Frame on the Rolex Dayto dial is not made of météorite, just the surface of the dial. The Combo dark gray and silver counter is captivating. I'm in love with this watch. Best, Nicolas

i've been a bit disillusioned by the number of not so ltd ed speedmasters released over the years, but this one has something special about it. the actual anniversary is not of much importance to me, but the dial makes the watch desirable to own. Graham

...That in the flesh is wide better!!! This woderful SpeedMaster has lot of superior details like: Rodhium Hands and Bezel wich gives a very special and elegant touch plus the most important, the Meteorite Dial which makes every one UNIQUE, the combination of the colors at the surface of the dial are just amazing!!...this is BY FAR the most pretty dial of meteriote I ever seen IMHO. A piece very desirable. Best Monster

I'm predominately a vintage Omega and Rolex guy but this watch is just so wonderfully manufactured. I was lucky enough to pick from a selection of three watches and picked a great looking dial. I highly recommend even though its a tad bit pricey. Frank

Congratulations Frank. Nice Speedy. I had the opportunity to see two meteorite dials side by side at the Omega Boutique and the differences in the dials were marked. For those considering purchasing this watch who are not wedded to a particular number, they should try to see as many examples as possible before choosing. But it's great that you are not just getting a unique edition number, but a unique dial as well. I also like this Speedmaster LE. Andrew

I agree that this is a very interesting looking watch. But I wonder: How will it age? My guess would be "very well". I'd also be interested in how it was created. I mean, polished, from one big meteor for all 1900 watches, lots of little ones, how much variation between examples, etc. I really like my 35th anniversary Apollo. It's a silver panda dial. I also have a traditional 3570 that I like when I wear but it doesn't really hold my attention.
