Jack Johnson's acquisition of the Omega Speedmaster 321 "Ed White" offers a fascinating look into the pursuit of a highly coveted timepiece. His experience highlights the unique production quality of Omega's dedicated assembly line and the unexpected twists that can accompany securing a rare watch. This article delves into his personal journey and the community's insights on this iconic reference.

Love this one so much - a very classic look plus the legendary 321 caliber!  This is the first watch I experienced in person that came from the dedicated Omega assembly line where the principle of 1 watch - 1 watchmaker is observed (or so they say!).  I must say I can see the difference in the assembly quality vs many standard assembly Omegas I experienced in the past - the hands are perfectly alighned, no dust under the crystal. etc.

The bracelet looks the same as on my FOIS but interestingly, the FOIS has a more advanced micro-adjustment system in the clasp (via a push-batton) - I wonder if they went with a simpler solution on Ed White for historic authenticity or any other reason?

The most unusual part of the story is that I had this watch on order from my beloved local AD and they have been telling me this one was really difficult to get, substantially more difficult than the Snoopy.  So, a couple of years have passed and then - to my astonishment - I, by pure chance, spot this watch on their display window while picking up my PAM 1628!  It paid off (finally!!) that I am quite educated in watches and could identify it by looking at the combination of the "normal" Speedy hands and the flat-linked bracelet!  It transipred that my manager was out for a couple of days and then her other colleagues just casually received the watch in a shipment from Omega and put in on display window, unaware of my long-standing order!  But all is well that ends well - this will make the watch even more memorable to me (knowing that it almost slipped away from me).

About the Panerai Ref. PAM1628

The Panerai PAM1628 is a distinctive special edition, sharing its fundamental case and movement architecture with the PAM372, but featuring a unique dial execution. This reference was issued in 2025, positioning it as a contemporary offering within Panerai's historical Luminor 1950 lineage. Its appeal lies in this combination of a well-regarded base model with a specific aesthetic variation, catering to collectors seeking a less common iteration of a familiar design. The special dial is the primary distinguishing characteristic of the PAM1628.

The PAM1628 utilizes the Luminor 1950 case, known for its cushion shape and the prominent crown protection device. The case is crafted from stainless steel and measures 47mm in diameter, consistent with the PAM372. It houses the in-house P.3000 manual-wind movement, which provides a substantial power reserve of three days. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal, ensuring durability and clarity, and offers a water resistance of 100 meters.

This reference is likely to attract Paneristi who appreciate the brand's larger case sizes and manual-wind movements, particularly those who already admire the PAM372 but desire a variant with a unique dial. Its release in 2025 suggests it is a modern collectible, potentially produced in limited numbers, which often enhances its long-term appeal within the collector community. The PAM1628 represents an evolution of a classic Panerai design through dial customization.

This one is definitely going to stick! I have had a fair share of Speedies in the past, but comfortable having ended up with the Ed White and the FOIS.

I finally found a good working workflow for uploading pictures here - I take them with my iPhone Air and then post via iCloud on my PC. This way the pictures come through in good quality and I can rotate them properly before posting - so that our dear moderators do not have to clean up the mess after me when posting directly from my iPhone. This sort of decreases my ability to post pictures spontaneously, but a great improvement overall.

I agree regarding the flat-link bracelet. The looks vs the standard Speedy one is always a debatable matter, but the flat one is much lighter and more comfortable (to me at least).
