Subexplorer shares the captivating story of his Omega Seamaster Ref. 2849, a vintage find that transformed from a neglected piece into a cherished 'watch of the week' winner. His personal account highlights the thrill of discovery and restoration for vintage watch enthusiasts.

Hello Friends!!

I´d like to share this little watch with you, and with your kind permission specially dedicate this post to my friend Baron.

I had the great nice surprise to learn that this watch had won the "watch of the week" distinction on last Wrist Scan.
I had submitted its picture as I usually like to participate every week, but with no expectations of winning, as I know the quality of pictures and watches usually shown at every Friday WS.

My friend Baron asked me to show some additional pictures, and I hereby comply with great pleasure.

I bought this watch about a year ago, when I found it covered in grease and grime, and with the plexi in such a bad shape, it barely showed that the dial was white, and the indexes look golden. No other details or inscriptions were visible.

Opening the watch, showed the movement was in very good condition, but badly needing to be cleaned and oiled.
The price was so low, that I couldn´t resist to take it home, in spite of its bad looks, and the horrible set of leather straps its previous owner had left on it, covered with grease and grim as the watch itself was.

I left the old watch at home, unattended for some weeks, till I had the time to visit my friendly watch maker, and I left it with instructions to clean and oil it, and change the plexi.

He dissasembled it and phone me to ask me to go to his shop, to see what he has found under the old plexi:
I was completely surprised as he was, when discovering that the dial was in pristine condition, and it had rose gold indexes and a honeycomb surface!

I was delighted to view this dial, and a few days later, the cleaned and oiled old watch was strapped to my wrist with a new set of Morelatto leather straps.

This is a reference 2849 Omega Seamaster, made circa 1957/58, with a 34 mm diameter steel case. Dial white honeycomb, with rose gold indexes, and numbers 6-9-12, date window at "3".
Movement is an automatic 503 caliber, with 20 jewels 19.800 bph.

I included a set of photographs of a similar movement, taken from internet, as I didn´t have my camera with me when the watch was opened at the watchmakers. Thus, these movement photos are not from my own watch.

This is a watch I enjoy very much wearing, a low profile watch, with has a very special charm. The rose gold indexes add a warm touch to the white dial, and of course, the waffle or honeycomb texture is an unusual feature which I love.

I wish you´ll like this watch as much as I do, and thank you for your kind attention!!
Very cordially, Abel.

Abel, "Muy hermoso". Congratulations. I'm always amazed when a simple cleaning and oiling can return an ugly watch to its former glory. Cheers, Nilo

Does dedicating the watch to me mean that I get to keep it??? !! Abel, thank you for dedicating it to me. When Art asked if I would judge the WoTW, he suggested that the winner was a watch that "intrigued" me. Well, i decided to define "intrigue" by seeing how often I came back to have another look at a watch. Yours was a total winner for me. Not only is it in superb condition, but it has total charm to it. I also think that the story of how you found it is so typically Purist. Thank you for pos
