In this insightful post, hmmmcamu explores the strategic introduction of the Omega Seamaster 120 in 1966, positioning it as a response to the burgeoning leisure diving market. His analysis highlights how Omega adapted its dive watch offerings to cater to a new demographic of affluent enthusiasts, moving beyond the professional-grade Seamaster models. This article delves into the historical context and design philosophy behind a reference that broadened Omega's appeal in the mid-20th century.

Late 1950's and thru out the 1960's SCUBA diving and SNORKELING was gaining popularity amongst the affluent and upper middle class as a leisure sport . Omega's big, heavy divers watches designed for professional divers did not suit the new emerging demographic.

In 1966 Omega introduced the SEAMASTER 120  line that came in both manual and automatic models with and without a date complication. A watch suitable for "TOWN, COUNTRY and SEA" as Omega stated, designed for the Gentleman @ 38MM minus crown (a smaller version for the Lady) as a sport /leisure/casual wrist watch.

The Gentleman's SEAMASTER 120  came in 4 models:

Case ref.# - 135.027 ....... Manual Movement, No Date, Caliber 601
Case ref.# - 136.027 ........ Manual Movement, with Date, Caliber 611 / 613
Case ref.# - 165.027 ........ Auto Movement, No Date, Caliber 552
Case ref.# - 166.027 ........ Auto Movement, with Date, Cailber 565

Colour variants:

Maroon dial and bezel
Green dial and bezel

About the Omega Seamaster Ref. Seamaster120

The OMEGA Seamaster 120, reference 135.027, was introduced to the general public in 1967, following a limited release in 1966. Positioned as a robust dive watch, it offered a more accessible alternative to the professional-grade Seamaster 300, while still providing significant water resistance for recreational diving.

This model features a 37mm barrel-shaped stainless steel case, manufactured by EPSA, with polished lugs and a screw-down case back adorned with a chemically engraved Hippocampus logo and "SEAMASTER 120 WATERPROOF" text. It is powered by the manual-wind OMEGA Caliber 601, a no-date movement. The watch is fitted with a reinforced plexiglass crystal and a bi-directional serrated bezel with a 0 to 60 scale and a luminous pip at zero. The matt black dial displays white text, white minute circle strokes, tritium baton hands, and luminous hour markers. Initially rated for 120 meters of water resistance, later models from 1968/69 saw this reduced to 60 meters.

For collectors, the Seamaster 120 reference 135.027 represents a significant piece of OMEGA's dive watch history. Its distinct design, manual-wind movement, and specific case construction make it a sought-after vintage piece. However, due to the challenges of sourcing original parts, collectors must exercise diligence in verifying authenticity, particularly concerning the dial, bezel, and movement serial numbers.

I had never quite understood that reference: your post explains everything. Lovely! I prefer the thin, manual-wound version - nearly pulled the trigger some years ago
