Dr No provides an exclusive look into Omega's partnership with ORBIS, a charity dedicated to fighting preventable blindness worldwide. This report details a special event in Los Angeles, offering a rare glimpse inside the ORBIS DC-10 Flying Eye Hospital and showcasing Omega's commitment to global humanitarian efforts.
. . . dedicated to eliminating preventable blindness in the developing world. Omega has made a significant commitment to ORBIS, which operates a flying eye hospital that visits impoverished communities around the globe. I was invited to the reception of the ORBIS DC-10 last Friday in Los Angeles, which brought local ORBIS affiliates to a meeting with their President, Dr Barbara DeBuono, and Omega US President Greg Swift.

Greg introduced Dr DeBuono, who gave a brief speech and showed a video highlighting ORBIS at work. We then left the airport facility and walked over to the tarmac . . .
. . . where, after being cleared by security . . .
. . . were permitted to board the DC-10.
Once aboard, we were given a tour that started at the front end of the plane . . .
. . . which is where the "lecture hall" for visiting doctors is located, along with the audio-visual equipment.
They even allowed us in the cockpit!

. . . ORBIS medical staff and pilot. The pilots and flight crew, as well as all the medical and support staff, are volunteers, and from all over the world - India . . .
. . . Peru, Australia, and China. The spirit of voluntarism, without borders.

The ophthalmology clinic . . .
. . . where conditions are diagnosed.
Dr James Brandt gave us a tour of the surgery room . . .
. . . right in the center of the DC-10. This is the most stable part of the plane, which is a critical consideration for delicate eye surgeries. He told us a story from his internship at USC, where he was so intent on performing an operation that he didn't realize an earthquake was underway until a nurse informed him the reason why equipment was moving about!
And how is Omega involved in this, you might ask? Omega, in conjunction with Daniel Craig, has committed to financially supporting ORBIS over the long term, and in honor of that commitment has created a special edition of the DeVille, the Hour Vision Blue . . .
. . . with a distinctive blue dial set by white gold markers and embellished with decorative engraving. The case is 41 mm, the movement an Omega cal 8500, in-house and viewable from not only the sapphire back but also sapphire panes in the side of the case.
My thanks to the LA Tourbillon and Omega boutiques for the invitation.
