Nitediver provides a detailed look at Ochs und Junior's unique approach to watchmaking, focusing on their Selene tinta model. This article highlights the brand's philosophy of simplifying complications, exemplified by the mathematically accurate moon phase display that uses minimal components.

ochs und junior – a non-watchmakers approach to watchmaking

Part 2

Selene tinta

The latest addition to the ochs und junior range. It adds a clever moon phase to the mese tinta. It features the worlds most mathematically accurate moonphase indication ever found in a wristwatch. I would take a stunning 3478 years to be one day off! Of course, this is a very theoretical value, but, I find it nevertheless amazing how Ochs und junior can push the borders of (mathematical) accuracy and at the same time use only five components (including the functional dial). There is no dial in the traditional sense of watch making – the dial is functional (technically part of the module) featuring a gear train on the back side. Hence there is no need for a dial maker. The case and the dial all come from the same source. The date spiral is the same as with the mese tinta.

The graphic shows the 13th of the month and an "decreasing" moon (the moonphase display works anticlockwise).

due ore tinta

The due ore tinta is Ludwig's Oechslin's time zone watch. The concept and the execution are simple and effective. While it may lack the innovative approach of the other watches, it is very functional and aesthetically pleasing. Similar to the selene tinta, the due ore features a functional dial with a gear train on the backside. The second time zone is on a disc, that would normally be the date disc. No much more to say. The case, dial etc follows the other tinta watches, which allows you to create your very own and individual watch.

The idea line

Ochs und junior is offering a few prototype timepieces for sale. These are certainly are interesting and exclusive pieces, cased in silver Basically the prototypes of the due ore, the mese and the luna mese (the selene tinta) belong to this product line, but you should check with Beat what is still available.

The settimana junior:

Ludwig Ocheslin's watch for children. It has a seven-day calendar featuring the characteristic orange dot. Its seven apertures are arranged in such a way as to line up with the hour digits 1 to 7. Simply clever! And true – for kids it is typically more important to know the weekday, rather than the date of the months. The case back is engraved with the name, address and phone number of the child. And the instructions are provided in the form of a cartoon. If this isn't child friendly!

The DB25 represents De Bethune's entry in the 44.5mm manual-wind category, distinguished by its silver dial configuration within the DB25 series. This reference launched in 2006 and continues the brand's approach to contemporary haute horlogerie complications.

The 44.5mm case is crafted from 18k white gold with a fixed bezel and sapphire crystal. Water resistance extends to 30 meters. The manual-winding caliber DB2105 movement provides a substantial 120-hour power reserve. The watch features a leather strap attachment.

...especially the Settimana Junior. The orange is so fun, but I cannot imagine buying one for a child -- for me, maybe! Thanks for the posts on Ochs und Junior. The watches are interesting and I like how complications are broken down into their essential components. Very cool. Cheers, Daos

I wore these two to a watch event the other night, and to my surprise, all the interest was in the Ochs, not the Rolex!

Congrats on the Tudor chrono. That's a fantastic catch (especially in light of the recent reissue). The OuJ is much more fun though! Cheers, Daos
