Hi folks,

I went through the press material from the Las Vegas Jewelry Show this morning and found images of the new Mühle Glashütte watches. This 146-year-old company remains in the hands of its founding family (despite 40 years being nationalized by the East German government). When the wall fell in 1989, the company was reinitialized and again began building clocks, and then in 1992 its first watches. Today it builds marine clocks and three main lines of wristwatches.

Disclaimer: I have owned one two (now gone) and currently have a marine chronometer. Here's the SAR watch I purchased about 12 years ago.

here's the other watch I just remembered that I owned

and here's my marine chronometer.

To give you a sense of the company's scale, they have about 50 employees, 370 dealers and build about 1000 watches a year. Since we seldom see this brand here, I thought it would be worth posting some nice clean images.

Starting with their top-of-the-line, we have the Robert Mühle Zeigerdatum (hand date), released on the 175th anniversary of the birth of the founder of the company. This has extra meaning to the current management, as it's their forefather they are celebrating, not a "historic brand" that was purchased by a marketing conglomerate and is being revived.

The RMK 03 hand-wound movement was designed and built in-house. The subdials display power reserve, small seconds, and date. It's composed of 180 components, 33 jewels, and has gold chatons and an engraved balance cock. Production is limited to 100 units.

Movement RMK 3 36.6mm and 21,600 (3 Hz) with 56 hours reserve

Here's the previous Robert Mühle non-date, also powered by the RMK 03 movement, and limited to 100 units.

The family has decided that a sportier look should help expand their appeal to today's watch buyers. The 2016 line has some new models, which appear below:

The Hand Date / Zeigerdatum 42mm x 12mm
SW 221-1 automatic movement

ProMare Chrono 44mm x 15.4mm MU9408 automatic movement, ceramic insert in the bezel, carbon dial

ProMare Date 44mm x 12mm SW400 automatic movement

Promare Lady 39mm x 10mm SW 200 automatic movement, glass or diamond indices on mother of pearl dial

Finally, we conclude with a quick viewing of their other marine watches - most of which could be called Tool Watches.

Like many companies, they have found a niche and in this case, it's the $2,000-5,000 price range.
They focus on serious watches that can do the serious job of providing the time in any conditions of lighting or weather.
Thanks for reading about this German watch producer.

It's a very interesting brand with a great history. They make very solid, reasonably-priced watches that should show up more than they do in Forums like this.

Or at least a genuine revival when the government's thumb was removed, rather than a marketing-driven creation. I like the good visibility and unpretentious styling too. Mike

But I seem to have completely missed it the first time around Thanks for sharing some really interesting additional details on the brand! I was for instance not aware that they actually only produce so few watches a year - would have imagined it to be a lot more. Likewise the ratio of watches produced to authorised dealers turned out to be surprising - with only about three per dealer moved per anno. Of course living in the German speaking world you see more dealers and most of them will have mo
