Dimardi's exploration of a new strap for his A. Lange & Söhne L1 Moonphase offers a masterclass in personalizing a revered timepiece. His choice of a dark purple Jean Rousseau strap with titanium stitching not only adds a unique aesthetic but also sparks a valuable community discussion on strap craftsmanship, material nuances, and the subtle art of color matching. This article delves into the practicalities and aesthetic considerations that collectors face when customizing their luxury watches.

The A. Lange & Söhne 1815 reference 206.032, introduced in 1999, is a notable example of the brand's commitment to traditional watchmaking principles. This model is part of the 1815 collection, which pays homage to the birth year of Ferdinand Adolph Lange and emphasizes classic design elements such as Arabic numerals and blued hands, drawing inspiration from historical Lange pocket watches. It represents a more understated and purist aesthetic compared to some of the brand's more complex offerings, focusing on fundamental horological excellence.
This particular reference features an 18k rose gold case measuring 36mm in diameter and 7.5mm in thickness. It houses the manually wound L941.1 caliber, visible through a sapphire crystal case back. The movement provides a power reserve of 45 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal on the front, protecting a solid silver dial. Water resistance is rated at 30 meters, suitable for everyday wear but not for immersion.
The 1815 206.032 appeals to collectors who appreciate classical proportions and a focus on fundamental watchmaking without excessive complications. Its smaller case size reflects a more traditional approach to men's wristwatches, making it a desirable piece for those seeking a discreet yet highly refined timepiece. The combination of rose gold and a silver dial offers a warm and legible presentation, consistent with the collection's historical inspirations.
Great looking strap too. I’ve had a few straps from Jean Rousseau and the quality of the stitching on yours looks better than I’ve seen on mine. Admittedly, mine came on an FPJ Chronometre Souverain - one factory strap and two additional straps. All three have some glue issues on the lug ends - loose material coming unstuck - which appears to be cosmetic rather than structural. In addition, the stitching on one of them is all over the place - very uneven - and that’s on a calfskin strap so no ex
Good information you provided! I appreciate it! I just received the strap yesterday so I can't speak to any long term quality issues but my initial inspection leaves me pleased with the quality of the material and of the craftmanship. My understanding is that the strap was made in the Jean Rousseau atelier in NYC for what it is worth.
I agree with you. I was surprised myself. I was at the Lange boutique in NY and was looking through their dozens and dozens of strap samples of all difference colors, material, and finish. I was initially thinking I wanted something blue but didn't like how any of their blue straps looked with the watch. I kept looking at all sorts of combinations and ended up really liking this dark purple.
