Ianny's journey to acquiring his A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Up/Down provides a compelling look into the decision-making process for a grail watch. His candid reflections on choosing between new and pre-owned, and the unexpected comfort of a larger timepiece, offer valuable insights for collectors navigating similar choices. This post highlights the personal connection and satisfaction derived from finally owning a highly coveted reference.

Hi guys.

Some of you may be aware that I have been mulling over Datograph for a while now. I could not decide which version to get so it was very hard deciding between old and the new and sought opinions here.

And while I was dilly-dallying, I side tracked and acquired other watches along the way. And it was thanks (or no thanks) to Jacques-Olivier's wonderful photos here that jolted me back to thinking of the Datograph again.

In the end, I decided to for the new for two reasons.

1. I can find the Datorgaph up/down at the AD whereas a the Datograph would have to be pre-owned, and I really do not want to risk buying a grail watch of
    dodgy provenance.

2. The Datograph up/down is stunning in the metal as well as in photo and I thought it really spoke to me.

I have read complaints of the weight of the Datograph and was wondering whether that would be an issue as the Datograph up/down is a bigger watch. But I was surprised that it was quite comfortable on my small wrist and on I think it is actually lighter than the Lange 1 Timezone, my other big Lange watch. And even though it looks massive on my wrist in photo, it actually looks really nice in real life.

I have been wearing the watch since leaving the AD and I can't stop looking at it whenever I can.

Here's a few iPhone taken shots. Apology the poor quality of the photos. But I'm quite sure I'm a more competent photographer than Bluenotte.smile

Regards,

iAn

you have to share it (or even worse) with a green monster! Just kidding :-) Congrats, may it bring you lots of pleasure on your wrist! It is always a very special moment when one gets one of his grails. Enjoy! Oliver

Some like the older, some like the new one better, matter of taste. The most important is that you feel completly at ease with your choice, that I find perfect by the way. Take care of this iconic watch ;) Cheers, Mark

... you pulled the trigger on a watch you've been gradually moving towards purchasing for quite awhile. I too found that the size/weight of a big/heavy watch on my small wrist is also something I've gotten used to very quickly. It becomes a non-issue.

Hi, I'm usually a quiet observer round these parts, but your story and images are striking and cheerful... a great way to start the day on the U.S. east coast. The dark dial/white metal/white register combination is both powerful and elegant in any format, but your new Lange makes it pop like few others. As stated above, I think each of us feels a slight rush of vicarious satisfaction when a member of the boards finally corners his "grail." Enjoy it in good health. -Tim

Such decisions can be more difficult than words describe, glad you made the decision that would make you happiest in the long run. The Dato (both iterations) are beautiful in my eyes and I congratulate you on a very fine piece. Hope it's comforting weight and presence bring you years of happiness. we're just missing a shot of that storied movement ;) I will be faced with the same choice somewhere down the road, hopefully following in your steps! Best, Colton
