Christianch makes a compelling case for the A. Lange & Söhne 1815 200th Anniversary F.A. Lange in platinum as the quintessential business watch. He argues that its understated elegance and superior finishing offer a discreet yet authoritative alternative to traditional dress watches, even suggesting it could be the 'new Calatrava.' His detailed comparison highlights the watch's suitability for professional settings where subtlety and connoisseurship are valued over ostentation.

The Lange 1815 200th anniversary F.A. Lange is really a perfect watch for business: beside the fact that it can be combined very well with some onyx cufflink and the pitch black
dial looks amazing with both white/blue/grey shirts it has very understated and doesn't attract too much attention in a business setting:

Here you can see it today with the grey shirt/onyx cufflinks combination

Fits very well with a blue shirt too. I think that very often we forget how important is to wear a discrete watch in certain business settings. I understand that watch-enthusiasts like myself
will often like to "impress" but this is not always good for business.  This is perhaps why the Patek Calatrava is often seen as a perfect business watch: discrete, not too flashy and with a certain
class-elegance reserved to the true connoisseur.

To me the 1815 200th anniversary F.A. Lange is the new calatrava smile the new 5227-G-010 launched this year by Patek has a similar black dial, a similar price even if in white gold.

Yet the calatrava -- that in most cases is and was a great "business" watch -- lacks the authority, sparkle and exclusivity of this 1815 lange in platinum. The lange level of finish is by itself
a great differentiator.

True, every business is different and in a certain setting pretty much any watch can be appropriate. But in many business environments you don't want a watch that screams wealth and ostentation.
It can give the wrong impression and might leave your clients -- existing or potential -- wondering or thinking too deep about your horological choices.

If you wear a suit as your daily uniform a classic watch like the 1815 is a perfect fit.

Could this watch be more ? Was a 200th anniversary edition more appropriate with a new complication or an enamel dial ? what about a hunter case?
My answer to all these questions is a simple no.

This watch doesn't have to be more: beside the fact that an enamel dial might have made the watch much less accessible, black enamelling doesn't always yield the desired results
and would have not been true to an historical representation of the first simple and elegant watches produced by Lange.  I don't think that a new complication was appropriate either:
this was already done in the past with mixed results.  A classic, elegant and simple watch doesn't need one. The size is perfect and very contemporary. The dial and metal combination
makes this 1815 a very unique watch. Not much to do with the 1815 LE with grey dial.

I personally don't like hunter cases and I think it would have been a distraction for this watch. Patek uses one in the 5227 but the overall result is less impressive than this lange.

I applaud Lange for thinking about the many enthusiast like myself that were looking for a truly pure, simple but classy and exclusive watch like this 1815 200th anniversary F.A. Lange.

What is not complicated or special enough to many collectors is perfect to others. I was much less impressed by the very exclusive (both in terms of production and pricing) of other
anniversary editions (or worse the idea to sell the watches in pairs).

Many of these watches end up being just collecting pieces or trophies in very valuable collections. Making a watch that is not just beautiful but usable daily in
every business and professional setting was a great idea.

Here is the last photo for this brief "on the wrist" review. The legibility and the platinum/black combination is fantastic on different lighting conditions.
Once again a great watch for a very important anniversary that shows how simplicity can take the centre stage and set up a new standard in elegant and discrete watches as your
daily business companion.

About the A. Lange and Söhne Emil Lange Ref. 1815

The A. Lange & Söhne 1815 reference 206.032, introduced in 1999, is a notable example of the brand's commitment to traditional watchmaking principles. This model is part of the 1815 collection, which pays homage to the birth year of Ferdinand Adolph Lange and emphasizes classic design elements such as Arabic numerals and blued hands, drawing inspiration from historical Lange pocket watches. It represents a more understated and purist aesthetic compared to some of the brand's more complex offerings, focusing on fundamental horological excellence.

This particular reference features an 18k rose gold case measuring 36mm in diameter and 7.5mm in thickness. It houses the manually wound L941.1 caliber, visible through a sapphire crystal case back. The movement provides a power reserve of 45 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal on the front, protecting a solid silver dial. Water resistance is rated at 30 meters, suitable for everyday wear but not for immersion.

The 1815 206.032 appeals to collectors who appreciate classical proportions and a focus on fundamental watchmaking without excessive complications. Its smaller case size reflects a more traditional approach to men's wristwatches, making it a desirable piece for those seeking a discreet yet highly refined timepiece. The combination of rose gold and a silver dial offers a warm and legible presentation, consistent with the collection's historical inspirations.

I think the white gold black dial 40mm Lange automatik with micro rotor movement is more like a Calatrava. I like the 1815 but it\'s a bit thick. That said I do like this watch and find it to have strong wrist presence.

I don't think the 1815 is new Calatrava, as that role is still suitably filled by Patek's offerings But no shame to the 1815 as it can stand on its own wonderful merits, many of which are IMO superior to Patek's Calatravas I love Patek, but for me, I have more of a desire to own Langes right now than Pateks The 1815 anniversary piece is great Enjoy it Cheers, John
