ArmisT's recent encounter, where his IWC Big Pilot was mistaken for an Invicta, sparks a fascinating discussion about watch recognition and collector humility. This article delves into the nuances of how luxury timepieces are perceived by the uninitiated and the graciousness with which collectors like ArmisT navigate such interactions. It highlights the Big Pilot's understated appeal and its role in bridging the gap between mainstream awareness and haute horology.

My BP is often my grab-and-go companion when I have to run errands.  While out the other day at a checkout counter, a young man in his 20s noticed the watch and commented “nice watch, is that an Invicta?” It took me a second to process in the moment, but I replied with a smile “thank you, no, it’s an IWC, Big Pilot.”
I recalled that many Invicta pieces are oversized, and it was nice to see a young man take notice of a watch (in a positive way), but I wasn’t sure he knew about IWC.  I never want to come across as arrogant/superior or more privileged than anyone else, and I’m pretty sure my response didn’t come across as such, but I hoped my response wasn’t abrupt still.  Nonetheless, it was a nice quick exchange, and support for my BP as a good unassuming choice for when someone randomly notices my watch.

Nice BP

This isn't an IWC but I sure do like it a lot.

No doubt B&R make great pieces that are fun to wear!

Maybe he was thinking of this watch

I had no idea Invicta made watches that looked "real", I thought they were all big and sparkling with ghastly fake gold

The top one is actually very nice.

And Greg’s Invicta below provides another nice example.

I know I'm in the minority but I like my Pro Diver.

It's a good gateway watch. You can beat it up all you want and you'll never kill it. It looks good. It has a Seiko movement that you can see...even if it's not beautiful or decorated it gets you interested in the inner workings of watches. And did I say affordable? I've spent more on burgers n beers with my wife than I spent on this watch.

Can’t deny that is value for a cool looking and wearing piece.

It has hints of Submariner too.👌🏽
