Mitch K's original post sparks a fascinating discussion about innovation in horology, contrasting the recent IWC Eternal Calendar with earlier independent watchmaker achievements. He challenges the narrative surrounding major brands' 'new' complications, highlighting how independent creators often pioneer such advancements years, if not decades, prior. This article synthesizes community insights, exploring the nuances of perpetual calendars, brand innovation, and the enduring appeal of independent watchmaking.

proudly announced the creation of their Eternal Calendar perpetual calendar. A nice, though a watch that wears huge, addition to their perpetual calendar line, they say that their moon phase indicator will be accurate for 4500 years (a feat no doubt but it is only a mathematical calculation for who will check that claim?  For sure within 450 years clocks will be imbedded in our brains and there will be no need for wristwatches - heresy I know).  Seriously, they also brag about their creation of a secular calendar that takes into account the 400 year correction for leap year.  Journalists have been drooling over the watch and some say it was the highlight of the recently completed WW.  They neglect to say that Svend Andersen created such a complication, included in a much more wearable watch, in 1996, in time to prove his complication at the change of the millennium.

Happy for IWC but they are way behind the times.

Just saying.

Cheers

De Bethune DB25 Reference DB25

The DB25 represents De Bethune's entry in the 44.5mm manual-wind category, distinguished by its silver dial configuration within the DB25 series. This reference launched in 2006 and continues the brand's approach to contemporary haute horlogerie complications.

The 44.5mm case is crafted from 18k white gold with a fixed bezel and sapphire crystal. Water resistance extends to 30 meters. The manual-winding caliber DB2105 movement provides a substantial 120-hour power reserve. The watch features a leather strap attachment.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking De Bethune's technical approach to timekeeping in a precious metal case. And there was a JLC ( Duometre Sphero moon ) which was accurate to one day each 3800 years. As you said, I guess that only a few of us will witness that in... 4500 years. :)))

You can laugh but I intend to outlast Andersen's 11,000 year moon phase watch.

I might need Vlad to bite me a few more times.

I have more modest goals. My plan is to check out the 400 year correction of the his secular perpetual (376 years to go)

Let's start modestly. Then, piano piano, and we'll see. :)
