I am thrilled to have back my 3705 Fliegerchronograph, a watch I truly love. It was an interesting service experience

The watch went for complete service early last July via an AD and was to take 10 - 12 weeks, later updated to mid-September return.  At the end of September I inquired about progress and was advised completion of the service was delayed as a part was needed from Switzerland. I waited, and then checked again in mid-November and was told a parts delay was continuing to affect completion. It was puzzling to me it could take so long to get a part for such a common movement... then, as I was about to inquire again, last week the watch returned from service.

As to the 3+ month service delay, the IWC service papers included a notation "replacement of the middle case" following the typical complete service details. Replacing the case for this watch struck me as a pretty major service intervention, and I asked the AD could they get any any more information. Alas, the only explanation forthcoming is the replacement was due to a water resistance issue.

Glad to have this one back on my wrist.

About the IWC Portuguese Chronograph Ref. 3705

The IWC Portuguese Chronograph reference 3705 represents the brand's approach to classical chronograph complications within the Portuguese collection. This reference features a black dial configuration, distinguishing it from other colorway options within the Portuguese Chronograph range.

The 40.9mm stainless steel case houses an automatic movement and incorporates sapphire crystal protection. Water resistance extends to 30 meters with a fixed bezel construction. The black dial provides the primary visual character for this particular reference within the series.

Reference 3705 appeals to collectors seeking a Portuguese Chronograph in stainless steel with the contrast offered by the black dial. This reference serves collectors who prefer darker dial configurations within IWC's Portuguese chronograph offerings, providing an alternative to lighter dial variants in the same case size and material combination.

If the case is ceramic…

I read that as there was a structural defect in the case or “black attaché case damaged upon inspection…so sorry Mr. Bond”…

Yes.

It would seem it had to be structural if they were unable to seal the case. But I *think* you raise a question whether the case could have been damaged in service. As a watch person I'd love to have been able to talk to the watchmaker/tech who was involved, out of curiousity, but that's not possible, so we will never know what they were doing all that time. Perhaps trying to locate where they stashed the spare inventory back in 1997...

Well, as long as they made the replacement gratis, sounds like a great job by IWC!

Yes…my money was on thread damage when they tried to open or close it.

How much was the service?

Just wondering since they replaced the ceramic case.
