ArmisT's original post delves into a critical, often-unspoken challenge facing collectors of independent haute horlogerie: the extensive production lead times. He thoughtfully explores whether the multi-year waits for brands like Voutilainen, sometimes stretching to a decade, act as a deterrent for potential clients. This discussion is particularly relevant as the independent watchmaking sector continues to gain prominence, making ArmisT's inquiry into the practicalities and psychological impact of these waits a timely and essential read for both seasoned and aspiring collectors.

Given the collective experience and wisdom of this forum, I needed to ask your perspective on the following. I know we all have a strong appreciation for Voutilainen and a host of other independent brands, but I have been trying to reconcile the interest in placing an order with the risk of long wait times to receive an order. Besides the lifetime wait for a Kikuchi Nakagawa piece (which is no longer open to orders), I didn’t realize that many (all?) of these other independents also conservatively have a waiting time of 3+ years, with Voutilainen being ~8 years(!) Clearly, the wait times are in part a function of rising popularity and strong client interest. However, I’m curious if long wait times specifically have prevented any of you interested clients from placing orders?

A lot can change in a year, a month, a day…and that’s not just for the client but for the watchmaker as well.  So I could only imagine any such order requiring a backup of some sort, perhaps.🤔 In reality, there may already be a process in place to account for the uncertainties of life, such as requiring to list an emergency contact(s).  Have any of you considered the uncertainty of “time” a barrier to pursuing an Indie?

Yes, I cancelled a voutilainen order

A few people said they were quoted one number and the wait has been significantly longer, which I didn’t really want to deal with. They are really nice watches though. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a long quote if it’s accurate. With that said, these are all small businesses that are reliant on one person at the end of the day.

"If it's accurate" is the key. It's up to the customer to decide if the cost and time are for them but that assumes accurate wait times

Thanks for highlighting this point. That’s an additional dimension of uncertainty that I didn’t even consider.

At my age I would not order a watch with more than one year waiting time 📆
