In the realm of independent watchmaking, the chronograph stands as a pinnacle of mechanical complexity and innovation. Author m2 ignites a compelling discussion by spotlighting the MB&F Sequential Chronograph, praising its engineering prowess and robust water resistance as a testament to independent brands outmaneuvering larger manufacturers. This article delves into the community's diverse perspectives on what defines an exceptional independent chronograph, exploring both technical mastery and the artistry of finishing.

De Bethune DB25 Reference DB25
The DB25 represents De Bethune's entry in the 44.5mm manual-wind category, distinguished by its silver dial configuration within the DB25 series. This reference launched in 2006 and continues the brand's approach to contemporary haute horlogerie complications.
The 44.5mm case is crafted from 18k white gold with a fixed bezel and sapphire crystal. Water resistance extends to 30 meters. The manual-winding caliber DB2105 movement provides a substantial 120-hour power reserve. The watch features a leather strap attachment.
This reference appeals to collectors seeking De Bethune's technical approach to timekeeping in a precious metal case. The extended power reserve and manual-wind operation position it for enthusiasts who appreciate hands-on interaction with their timepieces. The 44.5mm sizing places it in contemporary proportions within the independent watchmaking segment.
1. The MB&F you‘ve mentioned 2. FP Journe Chronograph Rattrapante Monopoussoir I am aware of other independent Chronographs, but my interest in those doesn‘t even come close to those mentioned above. Also had a look at the gphg chronograph winners of the past 8 years and none of these would make it on my list.
doesn’t speak to me at all, unfortunately. What do you think about the 1941 Grönograaf ? Aesthetically it speaks to me more. The Petermann Bédat ref. 2941 Monopusher Split Second is quite nice too. But I’ve seen none of these watches in person. Best, Emmanuel
is outsourced. MB&F only assembles. My favourite chrono is PB 2941.
Both seem interesting. The sequential functionality is nuts though 😂
Nothing wrong with it imo. It doesn’t hurt quality. IE dials for Dufour are done by a 3p
vs 100% outsourcing. I can't justify paying all that for an assembler.
