Caius introduces his latest acquisition, the Heuer Carrera Dato 45 Ref. 3147, offering a detailed look at this distinctive vintage chronograph. His post highlights the various dial configurations of this mid-60s model, providing valuable visual context for collectors interested in the Dato 45's evolution. This article serves as an excellent reference for understanding the nuances of an uncommon Heuer Carrera variant.
The Heuer Carrera Dato 45, reference 3147, represents a distinctive chapter in the Carrera lineage, introduced in the mid-1960s. This model is notable for its two-register chronograph layout combined with a date display, a feature that sets it apart from many of its contemporaries. The 'Dato 45' designation refers to the 45-minute chronograph counter and the date complication.
Powering the Dato 45 is typically a manual-wind Valjoux 92 movement, modified to incorporate the date function. The case design maintains the classic Carrera aesthetic, characterized by its clean lines and angular lugs, contributing to its legibility and wrist presence. Dial variations include both black and white options, with some later versions featuring 'exotic' or 'reverse panda' configurations that are highly sought after.
For collectors, the Carrera Dato 45 is prized for its unusual date placement at 12 o'clock on early models, a design choice that adds to its unique character. Its relatively short production run and distinct aesthetic contribute to its collectibility, making it a significant reference within the vintage Heuer catalog. The condition of the dial, particularly the integrity of the luminous material and the absence of significant patina or damage, is a key factor in its market value.
. . . the grain of convention, which is precisely why I found it so interesting. Thanks very much for the additional details, Doug. Cordially, Art
I start to appreciate this " Moshe Dayan " edition. Thanks for having taken the time to write this review, Doug. I will come back reading it many times, as I am starting to lurk on the Carrera, after some years of ignorance. Best, Nicolas.
Great posting, with some excellent photos. On a recent outing, I took along five 1960s manual wind Carreras (including the 2447 predecessor, shown on the left). The Carrera 45 Dato was, without a doubt, the favorite of all those who were in attendance!! Jeff
a very uncommon design, but seemingly typical of Heuer during the 60's when they were doing all sorts of innovative things. it is a very similar design to a rather rare Omega Deville chrono from the same period which had a subsecond dial at 9 with the date inside it. i cant remember the calibre off the top of my head, but they are rarely seen and always on my wishlist. your watch is in unusually good condition so enjoy it and we will enjoy it vicariously. best Graham
May I ask what ultra cool Nato band you are using on your Dato? I would love to buy it. Is it dark brown? Cheers Thilo
