jrwong23 (aka watchthebin) shares his journey to acquiring the Grand Seiko Spring Drive SBGY009, a watch that perfectly fits his preferences after a long search. This post details his considerations regarding case size, dial texture, and movement, offering valuable insights for collectors with similar wrist sizes. It celebrates the joy of finding a timepiece that truly resonates with personal taste and comfort.
Since I started collecting Grand Seikos, I had always wanted a spring drive reference but for some reason, have been buying their watches with other movements.
The Snowflake wears too big for me at 41mm, the Shunbun has the dial I love but in its 62GS case in 40mm, the lug to lug is a tad long for my wrist, the Omiwatri esp in light blue is one I almost got but for some reason the case didn’t speak to me (same for the autumn red dial SBGY035). The Evo 9 collection is unfortunately too big for my small wrist so the white birch and other references in spring drives are also out.
The closest I considered was the Omiwatri and the Asaborake, which is in the 44GS case and that is my favourite GS case. However for some reason, I wanted a more playful dial in terms of colour and texture.
Just when GS Singapore boutique kind of gave up recommending a spring drive for me, they suddenly pinged me recently to say they managed to source for some “new old stock” pieces from an AD in a neighbouring country. They organized a small boutique event last month to showcase these watches and this SBGY009 was the one that caught my attention and so I bought it. Bonus - it has no date too ! Vlad will be proud
This watch was launched in 2022 for the 55th anniversary of the 44GS. It has the relatively new manually wound spring drive 9R31 movement and with this movement, the SBGY009 is definitely one of the thinner GS around. I must confess I much prefer these newer GS watches with their newer movements which make the watches thinner now. See last few pictures of this SBGY009 and my SLGW005 - both have their respective newer manually wound spring drive and hi-beat calibers , both without dates , both in the iconic 44 (or 45GS) case designs.
The blue textured dial is quite dark and only comes to live with sunlight or bright indoor lights. Sharing some pics here. This watch is also a strap monster like many GS so I paired it with calf or rubber straps (sorry GS, I just can’t seem to like using your stock leather straps for some reason).
Enjoy !

About the Grand Seiko Heritage Collection Ref. SLGW005
The Grand Seiko SLGW005 is a limited-edition model within the Heritage Collection, designed as a recreation of the 45GS. This reference is notable for its distinct case design and the integration of a modern high-beat manual-wind movement, distinguishing it from other contemporary Grand Seiko offerings. It represents a specific aesthetic and technical direction within the brand's historical reinterpretations, focusing on a more traditional, dress-oriented profile.
This timepiece features a stainless steel case, measuring 38mm in diameter and 10.3mm in thickness, with a box-shaped sapphire crystal. It houses the manual-wind Caliber 9SA4, which operates at a high frequency and provides a power reserve of approximately 80 hours. The movement is visible through a sapphire exhibition case back, allowing appreciation of its finishing and construction. The water resistance is rated at 30 meters.
Appealing to collectors who value historical fidelity combined with advanced horological mechanics, the SLGW005 offers a refined alternative to Grand Seiko's more sport-oriented or larger-cased models.
