I’ve been looking for this limited edition reference for weeks now. I thought they were long ago sold out, but lo and behold, I was pleasantly surprised to find that an authorized dealer I’ve done business with previously just got one in stock. I was very excited and hope you don’t mind if I present my first formal “unboxing:”

Although a bit corny, I love how Grand Seiko describes the inspiration for its references:

44GS inspired by the full moon over the Shinshu mountains

2022 marks the 55th anniversary of the 44GS, which in 1967 introduced the unique design language that would guide the brand's timepieces for decades to comethe Grand Seiko Style. In commemoration, Grand Seiko presents the 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition reference SBGY009 featuring a dial inspired by tsuki tenshin, the moment when the full moon is at its highest point in the sky.

This is my first modern Grand Seiko and first spring drive movement. I feel both lucky and fortunate to add this one to the collection.

About the Seiko Ref. SBGY009

The Grand Seiko SBGY009 is a limited edition timepiece that pays homage to the brand's iconic 44GS design, first introduced in 1967. This model is part of a series celebrating the 55th anniversary of the 44GS, known for establishing the Grand Seiko Style. It features a distinctive case architecture characterized by sharp angles, flat surfaces, and a mirror-polished finish, reflecting the brand's commitment to precision and aesthetics.

This particular reference is equipped with a Spring Drive movement, known for its smooth gliding second hand and high accuracy. The case is crafted from stainless steel, offering a robust yet refined presence on the wrist. The dial often features intricate textures and colors inspired by Japanese nature, in this instance, a blue dial evoking the full moon over the Shinshu mountains.

For collectors, the SBGY009 represents a blend of historical design language with modern horological innovation. Its limited edition status and connection to the 44GS anniversary make it a notable piece within Grand Seiko's contemporary offerings, appealing to those who appreciate both heritage and advanced movement technology.
