In this insightful post, 'this_hobby_of_hours' shines a spotlight on the Girard Perregaux 4940 Traveler II Jumping GMT Alarm, a neo-vintage gem from 1997. He meticulously details two distinct versions of this 38mm timepiece, showcasing both the rare salmon dial and the black dial on a bracelet. His passion for neo-vintage watches and GP's design prowess is evident, offering a compelling look at why these pieces deserve renewed attention from collectors.

Friends,

Today, we switch to another GP model Iโ€™m very fond of. In 38 mm, this is the 4940 Traveler II Jumping GMT Alarm launched in 1997.

And since I had the salmon dial out, the black dial came out too on bracelet. Both with Breguet applied numbers. You will
Also notice the engine turned dial so that the center section Is lacquered and the the outer track is engine turned and sunken.

Railroad outer track on both dialS. The indices round on the salmon dial and the square on the black dial. I hunted down this black dial because I like the applied Breguet numbers with the GMT also with a black background.

The salmon dial saw only 150 made and it was priced above the solid gold model according to GP archives. A rare bird. Salmon done right.

GP knows itโ€™s dials and colors very well. I find that that even with a lot going on, the dial is balanced and harmonious. Especially like the date being at 6 oโ€™clock.

Elements of red as is custom for GP models during this era, I find the 4940 to be full of character Strong wrist presence, large dial (case 38 mm), they are not overbearing. The box crystal sapphire illuminates the dial and gives it more depth. At 13.5 mm thickness, it still fits nicely under a shirt sleeve especially because of the stepped tiers to the case.

Satin finish with polished lugs, add to the balance of this piece.

Flame blued seconds hand for both versions and dauphine hands that have an elegant look to them. Nicely lumed.

As always, when possible, I try to get the bracelet for these neo-vintage watches. Once gone, they are gone.

I hope you enjoy the pics.

About the Girard-Perregaux Ref. 4940

The Girard-Perregaux ref. 4940, known as the Traveler II, is a notable example of a sophisticated travel watch from the early 2000s. It integrates a mechanical alarm and a second time zone display, presenting these complications with a balanced dial layout. The design emphasizes legibility and functional harmony, distinguishing it within Girard-Perregaux's contemporary offerings for its thoughtful integration of multiple features. The salmon dial variant, produced in limited numbers, is particularly recognized for its color tone and overall aesthetic appeal.

This reference features a 38mm case, often crafted in precious metals, housing the self-winding Calibre 2291. The movement provides the dual functionality of an alarm and a second time zone, alongside a date display. The watch is fitted with a box sapphire crystal, which adds a perceived depth to the dial and enhances the visual experience of the various indications. The execution of the chamfered date window and the playful 24-hour second time zone indicator are specific design elements that contribute to its distinctive character.

Appealing to collectors who value mechanical complexity and refined aesthetics, the ref. 4940 stands out for its combination of practical complications and a distinctive dial. The limited production of certain dial colors, such as the salmon variant, adds to its collectibility. It represents a period when Girard-Perregaux was exploring sophisticated travel-oriented timepieces, offering a blend of traditional watchmaking and functional design.

I'd buy a new one now too bad brands fall away from their roots

excellent models, but what catches my attention is the clarity of your photos, what camera did you take the photos with or was it with a cell phone?

And innovative now that they are independent again. A lot of focus given to UN so I hope that GP does not get forgotten. The potential for heritage models is great for GP. Marketing and control of inventory (which affects secondary market prices) continues to be a problem for the current management. Iโ€™m sticking with neo-vintage or discontinued pieces myself as they are largely unaffected by the current GP/AD business practices.

I hope that my posts show folks the amazing GP neo vintage pieces that they may be missing out on. IMHO, the 1990s have such beautiful pieces (across brands) and often at such amazing prices too. Simply revolving ones collecting around the modern pieces alone at the AD can be selflimiting.

By his salmon cousin. Yes, the salmon is very pretty. As so few were made, they rarely come up for sale on the secondary market. The solid gold one is super nice too. Check c24 to see what available.
