blomman Mr Blue introduces the Girard-Perregaux Traveller II, reference 4940, sharing his initial impressions of this distinctive timepiece. He highlights its unique case design, which strongly evokes GP's aesthetic, while noting the dial's departure from typical GP numerals due to its alarm, second time zone, and date complications.
Friends,
I would like to share another watch I never saw in real before our recent weekend in Paris: the GP Traveller II with black dial in stainless steel.
When I see the case of this watch I immediately think Girard-Perregaux.
The short, rounded and curved lugs shouts GP!
But in the same time the dial does not give me that typical GP vibe…
Why? It might have to do with the complications: alarm, second time zone and date.
The Second time zone is cleverly incorporated with the alarm scale at twelve, balancing the date window at six.
The big luminous hands are very much GP from this time era, early/mid 2000.
But I find
the numerals quite different from what we normally see (I am sure CC will show
us some example, but this is not the one I find as typical GP numerals
).
I really like the strap combo, the red stitches makes the watch look more sporty, almost a big “racing”!
Inside is the automatic caliber GP 2291, 31 jewels, 28800 vph.
As a long time collector of alarm watches I must confess that I don’t find the sound of the alarm in GP’s alarm watches as sophisticated as in some other brands.
We all know that in the vintage alarm watches from the 60’s and 70’s it was not in-house movements. GP used AS based movements. I suspect this is the case here as well.
That said, I would not hesitate to add one of these beauties to my growing GP alarm theme!
The case back says it all, or almost all – Time Zone, Alarm, Automatic. Should have said Date as well.
The watch is 38 mm in diameter but looks bigger on the wrist, more like 40 mm. I like it a lot, but it surprises me a lot. Normally with GP is the other way around, feels smaller than it is…
A very pleasant experience, this 4940! If I understand correctly, the 4940 came with several different dial versions. White, grey, black and pink.
This is a watch I would love to add to my collection, but if I could choose freely, I would go for the Pink dial…
The Dandy in me…
Big thank you to HS for letting me see and try this watch in real!
Best

The Girard-Perregaux ref. 4940, known as the Traveler II, is a notable example of a sophisticated travel watch from the early 2000s. It integrates a mechanical alarm and a second time zone display, presenting these complications with a balanced dial layout. The design emphasizes legibility and functional harmony, distinguishing it within Girard-Perregaux's contemporary offerings for its thoughtful integration of multiple features. The salmon dial variant, produced in limited numbers, is particularly recognized for its color tone and overall aesthetic appeal.
This reference features a 38mm case, often crafted in precious metals, housing the self-winding Calibre 2291. The movement provides the dual functionality of an alarm and a second time zone, alongside a date display. The watch is fitted with a box sapphire crystal, which adds a perceived depth to the dial and enhances the visual experience of the various indications. The execution of the chamfered date window and the playful 24-hour second time zone indicator are specific design elements that contribute to its distinctive character.
Appealing to collectors who value mechanical complexity and refined aesthetics, the ref. 4940 stands out for its combination of practical complications and a distinctive dial. The limited production of certain dial colors, such as the salmon variant, adds to its collectibility. It represents a period when Girard-Perregaux was exploring sophisticated travel-oriented timepieces, offering a blend of traditional watchmaking and functional design.
Hi That looks rather good. Really like the combined GMT and alarm function as well as fact that its automatic. Think I'd stick to the black dial though - really like the red highlights on it. Cheers JML
For travelling! :) One to add to your great Alarm theme, my friend? :) Best Blomman
and provide some additional info. There have been two different Reference versions of the Traveller II within the Classic Elegance line. Ref 4940, with a 38mm case is actually the older model Ref 4935, with 40mm case appeared in the 2004 catalogue and replaced the 4940. Besides the case size, almost no differences between both models. Both lines were available in a large number of dial versions and metals. So here is my 4935 as seen a few times before. Larger case and applied Breguet numbers: An
Shows the wealth of versatility & variety . - Sometimes, though I ask myself, if GP hasn\'t been overdoing it with too many models (?). Really enjoy your 4935 : absolutely love the applied Breguet numbers; And true - the 3,6,9 dial also, looks cool ! Thx for updating us ! Best, hs
