Friends,

While visiting the Manufacture last week I was wearing my Girard-Perregaux Olimpico Chronograph reference 8846.

Sadly, we all know there will not be another Girard-Perregaux Olimpico Chronograph…

But when I had another look at the new Competizione collection…

Competizione, Stradale:

I could not help my self dreaming about another Olimpico…

Imagine a modern sized Sports chronograph 40 – 42 mm with the same or similar dial as the Olimpico 8846…

Sunburst dial in silver, classic blue and red Tachymeter scale, 12 hour/three sub-dials chronograph…

If you think about it…

The new Girard-Perregaux Competizione is quite similar!

42 mm, 12 hours, Sports chronograph with oversized crown, round pushers…

And if you look at the case there are a lot of similarities.

Round, quite low and thin bezel…

The lugs are coming out of the case as an extension of the case curve.

Pretty wide between the curved, short lugs!

Now the dial, the dial already have applied indexes.

Remove the date, add the blue and red Tachymeter scale.

Since “Olimpico” name is out of the question, why not add the “Competizione” instead?

They could even use the same, very cool font face!

Taste it… “Competizione”… Mmmm… I like it!

smile

And on the back? Since the “Competizione” is inspired by race car and rally motorcyclists…

Why not replace the see-through case back with a solid one…

Engraved with a motif that goes with the spirit of the watch?!

Now I am only daydreaming here… But doesn’t it sound like something many of us would love to see?

Imagine it in a place like this…

wink

Robust, yet classic and elegant Sports chronograph!

smile

What do you think? Yay or Nay…?

About the Girard-Perregaux GP Vintage Ref. 8846

The Girard-Perregaux Vintage 8846 is a notable chronograph within the brand's Vintage series, often recognized for its association with the Olimpico designation. This reference represents a period when Girard-Perregaux produced chronographs with a distinct aesthetic, appealing to collectors interested in mid-century sports timing instruments. The design cues of the 8846 align with the broader Vintage collection, emphasizing classic proportions and a functional layout, making it a representative example of the brand's chronograph offerings from its era.

The case of the 8846 is typically presented in stainless steel, housing a manual-wind chronograph movement. While specific dimensions can vary slightly between examples, it generally features a case diameter around 38mm, a size considered classic for chronographs of its period. The watch is fitted with a Hesalite crystal, common for chronographs of this type, contributing to its vintage character. The movement, often a Valjoux-based caliber, provides reliable chronograph functionality.

This reference appeals to collectors who appreciate vintage chronographs with a strong brand heritage and a connection to specific historical designations like Olimpico. Its relatively understated design and robust construction make it a practical choice for daily wear while retaining collector interest. The 8846 fits into the broader narrative of Girard-Perregaux's history as a manufacturer of precision timepieces, including those with sporting applications, and is sought after for its specific design and mechanical attributes.

The problem with these comparative pictures is that the case of the Competizione looks less sensual than the Olimpico whose proportions are hard to beat. Still, the Competizione is nice looking, and IF there was not this bloody date and if they opted for a solid case back, then it would suddenly be more tempting. Best, Nicolas

like you, I see a lot of similarities. I do think the Olimpico line should be closed once and for all, even if there wouldn't be the issue with the name rights. The new sports chrono from what I have seen so far in pictures is quite attractive, in particular I like the black dial (not the perforated) with the bracelet. When it comes to wishes, rather than some LE of "Competizione, I would much rather like to see one feature of the 8846 coming back, which is the manual wind movement. GP does have

That is not really nice as the caliber seems lost :-( Best wishes Alkiro

Competizione vs Olimpico....spell vs spell... Both truly super and you know I like all your ideas ...buckle or no buckle

Less sensual side-by-side, yes I agree. But since the 8846 is very hard to find and all are not into vintage... This would possible be a good alternative! Best Blomman

But maybe it is time to create a equally iconic line...?! Best Blomman
