Subexplorer introduces a unique cultural tradition: 'Dia del Amigo,' celebrated on July 20th in Argentina. This day commemorates the Apollo 11 moon landing as a universal symbol of peace and friendship. Subexplorer shares the fascinating origin story of this celebration, conceived by an Argentine dentist, Dr. Enrique Ernesto Febbraro, who envisioned it as a worldwide observance.
Happy Friends Day!!
Today July the 20th we celebrate in my Country the "Dia del Amigo": the Day of Friendship, remembering the first steps of Men on the Moon in that memorable July 20th, 1969 and honoring the extraordinary achievement of those brave men in Apollo 11 mission: Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins.
This celebration was an idea of an Argentine dentist Dr. Enrique Ernesto Febbraro (1924-2008) who, while viewing Armstrong and Aldrin first steps on the Moon through his B&W TV set felt that the arrival of the first Men to the Moon represented a Universal Gesture of Peace, friendship and goodwill among Men and Women around the entire World which deserved to be celebrated every year on July 20th.
So that just a few hours after the moon landing he wrote and mailed hundreds of letters worldwide (those were times when e-mail or social nets like Facebook or Instagram were something that nobody even dreamed with) which were directed to influent people inviting to make his idea a celebration in all Countries.
Regrettably his wish of a Worldwide celebration never came true and it is only celebrated each year only in Argentina when friends gather in restaurants and cafes to have a meal, chat and make a toast for their friendship.
This year 2020 celebration will be different and replaced with Zoom meetings, mails and phone calls as we are still going through lockdown.
But the spirit of Friendship and the memories of that unforgettable "First step for a Man and a big leap for Humankind" will be present as ever.
Happy Friends Day to all my dear friends!!
Abel

Wishing you a wonderful friends day. Best Bill
Have a great 20th July Abel. We can celebrate it at WPS. We are all friends! The idealist Dr. Enrique Ernesto Febbraro is a nice doctor. World peace we want all. In safety enjoy our watches for years and years. The first men on the moon was maybe another game, known as ‘my country is the fist with a man on the moon,’ and your country was too late, because we have better rockets, everything better. Known as the space race, a political game between two world powers in the 20th century. So, world p
Be well and stay safe.
. . . anything, a celebration of friendship and understanding should be at the top of the list. Amicably, Art
Of course I know about the so called Space Race and how it served through that political game to show the primacy of one Country over the other. In any case, I feel it was a Great Feat and Accomplishment, and that the men involved in those space flights both Americans and Russians astronauts were brave guys, specially considering the state of technology of mid through ends of 1960's. It was a political game no doubt but we can view also that today the International Space Station is operated by t
... together with the celebration of Apollo 11 and Moon landing posts. I always felt it was a great idea and can´t understand that this project of Dr. Febbraro didn´t get the same interest around the world. Here friends gather every year for July 20th to have lunch or dinner or just for a drink. All restaurants and caffes and bars are at full all day long flooded with people celebrating their friendship. This year it is completely different of course, as we are still going through confinement bu
