Here are some Live photos and a Retrospective of 30 years of Chopard at the Mille Miglia .

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Chopard's love affair with the “corsa la più bella del mondo” (most beautiful race in the world). Chopard celebrates this important landmark with a special limited, numbered and COSC-certified Mille Miglia 2018 Race Edition. A 44 mm timepiece fabricated with passion, style and precision will be in the race this year. You can join in with either one of only 1,000 pieces in steel, or one of just 100 pieces in a two-tone version of 18-carat rose gold and steel.

Chopard has been a sponsor and official timekeeper of the Mille Miglia since 1988 although the legendary car rally was born 90 years ago. From 16th to 19th May 2018, the race will see 440 teams cover a distance of one thousand miles (about 1,600 km) along a historical route from Brescia to Rome and back via Ferrara, Cervia, San Marino, Sienna, Parma and the famous Monza racetrack. This competition is only for historic models, of which at least one example took part in one of the original Mille Miglia Races held between 1927 and 1956. By a tradition that began in 1988, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele – Chopard co-president and a passionate classic car driver – will also compete in this latest race.

Family Ties

The Mille Miglia is a family story of passion, transmitted from generation to generation, for the Scheufeles. All the members of the family have taken part or attended the Mille Miglia under the Chopard team colours.

This year, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele will approach the starting line watched by his father, Karl Scheufele, who used to race with him and instilled his own fascination and enthusiasm for classic cars. They were precious moments to pass on a passion for fine mechanics of both horological or automotive flavour.

The Mille Miglia is a tough regularity rally that requires constant attention and is intolerant of imprecision. Such lessons are learnt by passing on knowhow, as well as teaching, sharing and accompanying, in order to avoid potential pitfalls.

The Scheufeles have tasted some success at the rally.

For Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, the ties between horology and motoring are strong: “Lovers of fine cars often have a weakness for precious timepieces, and vice versa. Extreme precision and sporting elegance are important in both fields.”

Since his first participation in the Mille Miglia, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele has not missed a race for 30 years. This year, he will be in a Porsche 550 Spyder RS A. The second Chopard team consists of Albert Carreras, son of world-famous tenor José Carreras, and his friend Jordi Pascual.

Some Chopard Guest Competitors are just plain pretty.

A COSC-certified watch with panache

Regularity rallies reward the quality of constancy. It is not just speeds that are measured, but also the drivers’ ability to maintain an allocated pace. A chronometer-certified chronograph movement like the one powering the Mille Miglia 2018 Race Edition must maintain a variation in rate ranging from -4 to +6 seconds per day. The frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a 42-hour power reserve ensure the regularity of this self-winding watch for the race duration.

The Mille Miglia collection is joined by the Mille Miglia 2018 Race Edition, developed in accordance with the rigorous criteria that the race requires. The engine-turned dial, the details of the pushers and crown, as well as the sapphire crystal case-back bearing markings celebrating 30 years of passion, all testify to the superlative degree of finishing lavished on this chronograph.

PuristS Comments

Since the beginning of sponsorship of the Mille Miglia Race in 1988, Chopard has presented each official race driver with a exclusive souvenirs such as watches, cuff-links and key-fobs.

From 1997, they started using mechanical self-winding movements for all Mille Miglia Race watch models and also marketed annual limited editions to the public. Prior to that, only competitors and guests had access to Mille Miglia Race watches.

The design motifs of the Chopard Mille Miglia 2018 Race Editions embody the “racing in style” vintage spirit cherished by Chopard. Comfort is essential yet never to the detriment of elegance.

The customs and conventions of the Mille Miglia: sport and performance, consistently governed by style and panache, call for a chronograph that makes the perfect transition between casual chic by day and elegant evening wear.

The live one Mille Miglia 2018 Race Edition looks much better than the photos....

lose the minutes/hours on subdials...

... It's funny that sophisticated designers still write hours and minutes on subdials, as if a watch owner needs to 'understand' that... it's really silly, yes? Also, this watch must lose the date at 4;30--only Zenith and Blancpain are legally allowed to do that date position... no one knows why it works for them, but it does...

Ha! But the subdials are too "big"

Mostel, We complaint about sub counters being too small and close together. When Chopard set them far apart, they lost the usual 3 o'clock position for the date window because there isn't enough space. The gap at 4.5 position is the only place, that other brands have discovered..... MTF
