About the Chopard L.U.C XPS Ref. 161902-5001

The L.U.C collection represents Chopard's ambitious entry into haute horlogerie manufacture territory, launched in 1996 to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the maison's founding by Louis-Ulysse Chopard. This XPS variant embodies the collection's core philosophy of elegant restraint, positioning itself as Chopard's answer to the classical dress watch category dominated by established Geneva and Vallรฉe de Joux manufactures. The L.U.C line marked Chopard's transition from primarily a jewelry house into serious watchmaking credentials.

The XPS showcases Chopard's proprietary L.U.C movement architecture, visible through its exceptionally thin profile that maintains the dress watch proportions essential to the design brief. The silvered dial presents a study in negative space, with applied markers and the distinctive date aperture at 3 o'clock providing functional punctuation without disrupting the visual harmony. The case proportions reflect contemporary sizing trends while honoring classical codes, with the rose gold execution adding warmth to what could otherwise read as austere minimalism.

Within Chopard's portfolio, the L.U.C XPS occupies the entry-level manufacture position, making Swiss-made in-house movements accessible at a more approachable price point than the brand's complications. The model appeals to collectors seeking alternatives to the obvious choices from Patek Philippe or Vacheron Constantin, though it lacks the deep historical provenance that drives secondary market premiums. Current market positioning reflects steady appreciation among knowledgeable collectors who recognize the movement quality relative to retail pricing.

Yes, I've tried it on twice,

first when it was released and last June. A wonderful timepiece. But, as you say, steel isn't ideal for me. Best, Emmanuel
