Watch Commission, a seasoned collector with a deep appreciation for traditional complications, shares his journey into Patek Philippe ownership. Having built a significant collection of independent brands and a lifelong connection to Audemars Piguet, he now contemplates adding a Patek Philippe to his esteemed collection. This article explores his dilemma between a Patek Philippe Annual Calendar 5205G and other highly coveted references, including a Laurent Ferrier Classic Moon Blue, inviting the community to weigh in on his significant horological decision.
Hi Patek owners
Long time watch collector, thinking about Patek.
I am in a wonderful position. I have a great watch collection, mainly focused on Independents these days, but a life-long relationship to Audemars Piguet - literally, my father bought the first Royal Oak in 1972, and I own many of their watches.
I hold Patek Philippe in high esteem. I am not into the steel and sport watches, I prefer the brand when it does its traditional complications.
I have a local boutique, they know me as watch collector who buys nice things and never sells anything. We have a good rapport.
My favorite in the current line-up is the 5935A. I would buy that on sight. (Or, in order of Lust: 5575 World Time with Moon Phase, 5230 NY Edition, or 5930G 011, the Singapore Red edition.)
After a long afternoon yesterday of geeking out about watches I am being offered an Annual Calendar 5205G. It’s in store, I can go get it now.
When I think about that particular design language I also think about getting a Laurent Ferrier Classic Moon Blue instead.
Any thoughts or comments? I like building relationships with brands, all of these are available at a slight discount in the secondary market, but that doesn’t really drive my decision. I just wanted to hear any comments or experiences. Getting the Annual Calendar wasn’t on my list. I like it, but I don’t love it… yet. Will go try it on again on tomorrow.
Pics to help trigger memory (I am terrible with the reference numbers.)

The Patek Philippe Reference 5930 combines two of the manufacture's highly regarded complications: the World Time and the Chronograph. This reference represents a modern interpretation of a complex horological tradition, integrating a flyback chronograph function with a display of 24 time zones. It is notable for its compact dimensions relative to its complication set, offering a balanced presence on the wrist.
The watch features a white gold case measuring 39.5mm in diameter, housing the self-winding Caliber CH 28-520 HU. This integrated movement provides a power reserve of approximately 55 hours. The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal, and the watch is water-resistant to 30 meters. The case design incorporates classic Patek Philippe elements, with polished and satin-finished surfaces.
Appealing to collectors who appreciate technical complexity and travel-oriented functions, the 5930 builds upon Patek Philippe's history of world time watches, tracing its lineage to earlier models. The integration of the chronograph adds a layer of functionality and horological interest. The reference is offered with a blue dial and is fitted with a leather strap, presenting a cohesive and refined aesthetic.
it’s a gorgeous watch, looks very good on my small wrist, though as far as I know your wrist is much bigger than mine but still. You are also traveling some, so world time complication should be useful for you I guess. My only gripe with the watch is that the chronograph minute counter is too small, but still it’s a beautiful piece. I haven’t tried the other two references you mentioned so can’t say anything.
I really don't like "watch buying by committee" - especially when that committee is a bunch of internet strangers - most of whom have never really met you.
all wonderful choices. I would say - especially since I have this problem - is that I rarely divest myself from a watch. So, we have to be more discerning in what we acquire. Do not buy something just because it is readily available. Go with what you like. So much - and what is so great about it- about this hobby is that it truly is like art. One can love one aesthetic that another absolutely detests, but we can all appreciate the art and craftsmanship nonetheless. I will say, after handling mor
My vote is 5205 but I have not seen all those references in the flesh and have not had them on the wrist. That's what's most important...go with what works for you!
Was more wondering about experiences… doesn’t wear well, has useless buckle, was an unexpected pleasure… that kind of feedback.
For the two ACs the LF seems like a more coherent and thoughtful design, from the dial side. But your eyes may tell you different. I guess my question is what’s the end game here? You are buying this watch to get to where? (This seems inferred in your post, building a relationship). If you are not really sold on either of the Pateks then hold off. Wait for the “better” watch for you to begin this relationship. And also, aren’t we just around the corner from some new releases? For that alone I wo
